32 innocent Indian fishermen arrested by Pakistan

Thirty-two Indian fishermen were arrested and six boats seized by the Pakistan Marine Security Agency from the International Maritime Border today for allegedly violating the country's territorial waters.

The arrested fishermen have been placed in detention, the maritime agency said.

Colonel Akhtar Ahmed of the agency said the fishermen had wandered 60 nautical miles into Pakistani waters when they were arrested.

"There were about 100 other boats that had come about 100 nautical miles from the coast but have been forced back into Indian waters. We only arrest the Indian fishermen if they get as close as 60 nautical miles inside our territorial waters," Akhtar said.

The fishermen have been handed to the dock police and a case will be registered against them.

India and Pakistan arrest scores of fishermen every year on charges of violating each other's maritime boundary. The fishermen sometimes languish in prisons for years.

Last month, the Pakistan government on the orders of the Supreme Court released a batch of 141 Indian fishermen lodged in Karachi jails.

The court orders came on a petition filed by the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (PILER) and the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF).

Pakistan marine security men kidnap Indian fishermen

Six fishing boats of Gujarat with 32 fishermen were picked up from the Indian territorial waters by intruding men of the Pakistan Marine Security and taken away to Pakistan, the National Fishworkers Forum (NFF) said. The boats, all from Veraval on the Saurashtra coast, were fishing in the Indian
territorial waters when the Pakistani marine security men intruded and shepherded the Indian boats into their territory, NFF head Hiralal Siyal said.

Manish Lodhari, secretary of the association and member of the Marine Products Export Development Authority of the union government, said efforts were afoot to contact the Pakistani counterparts of the NFF for further information on the fishermen's whereabouts.

"We have also informed the central and state authorities in this regard," Lodhari added.
