The four frigates India has contracted from Russia last week during the summit meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin will bring in superior stealth technology and augment force levels, officials say.

The basic structures of two of these ships are already ready in Russia, they add.

As per agreement two more ships are to be built in India with technology transfer.

The Inter-Governmental Agreement was signed last week for four additional Krivak or follow-on Teg class stealth frigates expected to cost about $4 billion. The final deal is yet to be concluded and officials said price negotiations will begin soon.

The Indian Navy designs stealth warships and senior officers had stated on several occasions that it is now a ‘builders Navy’ and vessels would not be imported. As to why India was buying the frigate now, sources said it was an old order which was held up due to engine issues with Ukraine.

The deal got delayed due to tensions between Russia and Ukraine over Crimea. “It has now been resolved,” one official said.

IDN TAKE: New Frigates From Russia Will Combine Russian Engines And BrahMos Missiles

Gas turbine engines for the new series of Project 11356 frigates designed for export to India will be manufactured by NPO Saturn. BRAHMOS anti-ship missiles will be supplied by BrahMos Aerospace.

The ships, built by the Kaliningrad-based shipyard Yantar, will be powered by gas turbine engines made by NPO Saturn. Thus, Russia will supply India with fully completed frigates.

In addition, the ships will be armed with the BrahMos anti-ship missiles jointly designed by Russian and Indian companies.

"These missiles are already mounted on the three Project 11356 frigates and Talwar-class ships”, said Praveen Pathak, manager of BrahMos Aerospace. “The ships being built under the signed agreement will be equipped with these Indo-Russian missiles as well”, he added.

The inter-government contract implying technical assistance to the Indian party in setting production of Project 11356 frigates was signed on October 15 at the BRICS summit held in Goa, India. As was agreed, two ships will be built in Russia at the Yantar shipyard, and other two – in India.

Apart of three mentioned Project 11356 ships, Indian Navy operates six Talwar-class frigates designed by the Severnoye Design Bureau and built at the Baltiysky Zavod and Yantar shipyards. Construction expertise of Talwars was the basis for designing of Russian Project 11356 frigates.

These new ships will be using Ukrainian engine just like previous ships of the class. Russian M90FP will not be ready till 2020. Project 11356 is essentially Russian variant of first batch of Indian talwar class which was designed with the help Indian DND (heavy influence from Project 17) . There is no new 'stealth' tech russians can bring in because we designed those in the first place.

I'm more concerned about the final cost. Anything more than $750 mil per piece is a waste of money.
