    Story Highlights
    • 302 km Agra-Lucknow Expressway was built in a record 23 months
    • Expressway to have 3.3 km stretch for fighter jet landings
    • Automated traffic system to manage in fog and reduce accidents
New Delhi: Six fighter jets of the Indian Air Force (IAF) starred in the grand opening on Monday of India's longest expressway in Uttar Pradesh. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav was present when his father and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav opened the Agra-Lucknow Expressway at Unnao, around 50 km from Lucknow.

Sukhoi and Mirage 2000s jets performed simulated landings, a first for any road launch. The first jet, a Sukhoi, could not land on its first attempt because of a dog that had strayed onto its path. The aircraft was forced to overshoot its touch-down spot. It was successful in its second attempt at the end of the show.

The 305 km expressway was completed in a record 23 months. It is tipped to reduce travel time between Delhi and the Uttar Pradesh capital from nine hours to around five.

Ahead of the Uttar Pradesh election early next year, campaign music blared out of speakers and the feuding Yadav clan put up a show of unity. Mulayam Singh's younger brother Shivpal, who has been ranged against Akhilesh, and Ram Gopal Yadav, reinstated weeks after his sacking, shared the stage.

Former chief minister Mayawati accused the ruling party of trying to rush the launch of the highway when even road signs haven't all been put up. "When I was UP Chief Minister, there were some flaws in the Noida Expressway...They said inaugurate it before polls but I refused to play with people's lives by inaugurating an incomplete expressway," she said.

On Friday, a fighter jet practised on a 3.3 km stretch of the highway marked for landings as part of a Defence Ministry plan for emergencies when military air fields are not available. A bureaucrat who was returning to Lucknow after watching the test landing was injured in a car crash on the brand new highway.

Earlier that day, the Chief Minister, who had recently taken a ride with his family on the expressway, had warned: "I request you to drive on the expressway with caution and not exceed a speed limit of 100 km an hour."

The state government hired an eight-camera set-up to shoot the event.

That is a huge savings of time for the thousands who will benefit from this motorway. What are the other details of this expressway? Lanes? Services? Exits? Speed Limits?

    • The cost of project was expected to be US$2.2 billion but was completed in US$2.0 billion in a record time of 22 months.
    • The expressway is 6-lane wide but the structures (major, minor bridges and underpasses) are already being constructed as 8-laned to be in tune with the expanded width of the expressway in future.
    • Express-way will carry all public amenities viz. under passes, service roads, provision for green belt, rest houses, petrol pumps, service centres, restaurants and four agricultural mandis for milk, potatoes, grains, fruits and vegetables.
    • It will connect Agra and Lucknow via shikohabad, Firozabad, Mainpuri, Etawah, Auraiya, Kanpur, Unnao and Hardoi. The expressway will start at village Etmadpur Madra near Agra and will end at village Sarosa Bharosa near Mohan Road, Lucknow.

    Objectives
    • To provide a fast moving corridor to minimize the travel time.
    • To connect the main townships / commercial centres on the northern side of Yamuna.
    • To ensure development of adjoining area like Mainpuri. Once Mainpuri is connected to Lucknow, Mainpuri will become a new Business Zone opening up opportunities for development.
    • To relieve NH-91 which is already congested and runs through the heart of cities like Aligarh, Etah and Unnao.
    • Reduce pollution and carbon footprint of vehicles travelling between Lucknow and Agra (commercial as well as tourists visiting the Taj Mahal).
    • Improve vehicle fuel mileage efficiency, reduce wear and tear on vehicles, and reduce logistical costs.
    • Enable farmers in western Uttar Pradesh to move agricultural, horticultural and milk products rapidly to major cities.
    • Accelerate movement of supplies and help to affected areas during Yamuna floods and other emergencies.
    • To infuse a new impetus to the development of the state by attracting investors in a big way.

This road is a death warrant to NH91 aka Grand Trunk Road. G.T Road is in worst condition, just 2 lanes and some places 2-3 feet deep potholes and most cars or buses often use state highways which add extra 100KM to 150KM journey and when I say 2-3 deep potholes it is actually an understatement, the real condition is even worst.

So they used the existing infrastructure between Agra and Firozabad and widened the road already present and named it a new expressway! :) This looks like jugaad, I have to use it once to know what they actually did, as these cities were already connected by direct roads.

Also the Yamuna Expressway exit at Etmadpur only so anyone going from Delhi or NCR can directly use Yamuna Expressway and at the end of it Agra Lucknow expressway route will start.

In case of emergency these highways are very useful for launching air attacks on enemy, many air forces around the world have doctrine like this and landing of su 30mki is a very big step
