Better and faster Surya Kirans will enthrall visitors at Aero India 2017

IAF’s Surya Kiran’ aerobatic team will be performing for the first time at Yelahanka Air Force Station grounds on February 14

BENGALURU: After a gap of six years and two editions of Aero India, the show stoppers are all set to take over the skies of Bengaluru again.

The resurrected ‘Surya Kiran’ aerobatic team of Indian Air Force is all set to make its maiden appearance in the upcoming Aero India event. The 11th edition of the premier air show will begin at Yelahanka Air Force Station grounds on February 14.

“We are thrilled to perform over the skies of Bengaluru. This is the first time we will be performing in the Bengaluru air show and we have prepared a flight plan of 18-20 minutes. For the first time, the team is ready with horizontal and vertical manoeuvers and as per the visibility, the team will be performing the stunts,” a senior pilot from the Surya Kiran team, told Express.

The previous Surya Kiran team, which flew in aged Kiran Mark-II aircraft, was accorded as one of the three nine-aircraft formation aerobatic teams in the world, other two being Patrouille de France, the aerobatic team of French Air Force, and Red Arrows of the British Royal Air Force.

Currently the regrouped Surya Kirans are flying with six newly inducted British Hawks - assembled by HAL. Compared to the Kiran Mark-II planes, the Hawks are faster and better. The team will be flying at a average speed of 550-700 kmph and will perform with the gray smoke instead of signature Tricolour smoke.

“The Kiran Mark-II aircraft were indigenously built and hence modifications of colour chambers were easy. As the current aircraft is built in the UK, modification is going to take some more time. There are some technical issues which are being addressed by the Air Force.

Hence, the signature stunt of Surya Kirans -- piercing through the heart -- will be missing during the air show. We would have loved to perform the stunt on the inaugural day of air show being Valentine’s Day,” the pilot said.

The Surya Kiran team is based at Bidar Air Force Station and by October, the team is expected to regroup with traditional nine trainer jets.

Major scare ahead of Aero India 2017: Man held with photos of air base, 9 SIM cards in Bengaluru

With just a week to go for the biennial Aero India from February 14-18, a 24-year-old man was taken into custody by the Yelahanka Police for suspicious behavior inside the air base. He has been identified as Mamnoon, a native of UP and was hired by the organisers to work as a welder. He arrived in the city just a few days ago.

According to the police sources, on February 4 at around 9:30pm, Air Force security staff found him inside the base at a secluded area. He was apparently speaking to someone over the phone from another country. When questioned, he failed to provide proper and convincing answers to the Air Force security who immediately called the Yelahanka Police. Upon being frisked, he had in his possession - 9 SIM cards and photos of the air base.

A complaint was then formally filed at the Yelahanka police station by the Air Force security and the man was arrested. The local police have also seized the SIM cards and his phone and further investigations are currently on. However, the Commissioner of Police later tweeted that there might not be any terror angle to this but that the police will look into all angles during the investigation.

Did you know that Saab’s BAMSE SRSAM is one of few systems in the world today that has been developed as a dedicated Ground Based Air Defence missile system?

With its all-weather capability, effective missile range of 20km and height cover of 15km – good enough to target bombers – the BAMSE SRSAM is a high precision system which can engage and defeat targets even at long range. #Saab has partnered with the Kalyani Group to establish a joint venture company in India for the SRSAM and VSHORAD programmes.

Learn more about the system at #AeroIndia2017.
