After 8 days & coaxing of 9 parties, Naidu breaks fast - The Times of India

HYDERABAD: N Chandrababu Naidu sipped coconut water to break his fast on Friday in the presence of leaders of nine national parties. Ending his indefinite fast on the eighth day, the TDP chief demanded a bigger relief package for farmers. He was forcibly put on drip on Thursday evening after he was forcibly shifted to the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (Nims) ICU.

CPM leader Prakash Karat, CPI's AB Bardhan, Ajit Singh of RSLD, Om Prakash Chautala of INLD, Thambi Durai of AIADMK, Janata Dal leader Sharad Yadav, A Daneshwar of JD(S), MDMK's Vaiko and Arun Kumar Sharma of Asom Gana Parishad flew down to Hyderabad from New Delhi by a special flight and persuaded Naidu to call off his fast. They told him he had successfully played his role and all of them would join him in launching a country-wide struggle on farmers issues.

"We want Naidu to lead the masses in the struggle for justice for farmers," Bardhan told reporters later in the evening. He said it had been tentatively decided to hold a massive farmers' rally on December 30 at Guntur. "All of us will participate in the rally," he said. Bardhan said about two days ago, they had met PM Manmohan Singh and urged him to intervene but he didn't respond sympathetically. "It is now going to be a long-drawn fight."

Karat said farmers were committing suicide not only in Andhra Pradesh but in many parts of the country. Urging farmers not to commit suicide, he assured: "We will fight for you". Vaiko condemned the state government for not dealing properly with Naidu when he went on fast. Chautala said the Congress had no faith in democracy. "They want opposition leaders to die. But we will jointly put an end to Congress rule soon." Earlier during the day, TDP and left legislators and MPs staged a dharna in front of the Gandhi statue in the assembly and marched to the Secretariat. A large number of policemen in full riot gear stopped them near Ravindra Bharati leading to a scuffle and arguments between the two. They were later arrested and shifted to Goshamahal stadium.

While the police heaved a sigh of relief thinking they had foiled an opposition attempt to lay siege to the secretariat, another team of about 200 activists led by MLA P Keshav reached the secretariat and tried to barge in. Keshav pushed aside the policemen and rushed towards the main gate. Policemen prevented him and tried to bundle him into a police van. He resisted for sometime before being finally pushed into the van.

TDP MP M Venugopal Reddy from Guntur and MLA E Dayakar Rao appeared in front of the CM's office in the Samatha Block of the Secretariat and sat on dharna demanding that the CM or ministers come out and take a memorandum from them. After an hour long sit-in, they were forcibly removed by the police.

IMO going on hunger strike should be considered an attempted suicide and should be treated as such.

What do other members feel about it?

According to the news article Naidu was on an indefinite hunger strike.

Simply because it was introduced by Gandhi, doesn't make it right.

It was used by him at a time when Indians did have no political representation and were fighting for self-rule.

I wonder how many farmers committed suicide when Naidu was in power and he was too busy converting Hyderabad into Cyberabad.

A case under Section 309 of Indian Penal Code (attempt to commit suicide) has been registered against Naidu while a case under Section 353 IPC (preventing a public servant from discharging his duties) was registered against other TDP leaders. (Chandrababu Naidu arrested, shifted to hospital)

as long as its peaceful ,no problem..Gandhi frighted for a cause and naidu also

I think we should take the attempt to suicide out of the Punishable crimes list and one must be able to choose ones own death if the person has a stable mind...........

Considering the fact majority of suicides are committed by people who are in an unstable state of mind i.e. jilted love, financial problem, failed in exam, mental depression etc. establishing whether a person is in a right state of mind would be futile.

However, I am in favor of euthanasia in cases of terminal illness to prevent the suffering of the patient and their families.
