That's not objectively when you single out the scoring only, because scoring high and winning the tender are 2 different things. The EF is currently the most produced and most exported modern European fighter. That makes it a success.
Similarly, the F35 might be a bad 5th gen fighter, but probably will be the most produced and exported one as well, which again makes it a success.

You judge a fighter aircraft by how well it fights, not how well it sells.

Only if you want to know how successful it is in combat, but we were talking about the success of arms products / arms programs and that is measured by the number that were produced and sold.

I think the mirage 2000 has more copies produced. Gripen might even have more exports. Too lazy to check.

I judge success in two senses, one how good the aircraft is, and two how much it's exported/sold. F-22 is a success based on one alone, even if it didn't sell a single copy if it was available for export.

F-35 will surprise people, F-16 was called the flying coffin when it started out (had like 100 crashes), F-18 was considered the worst aircraft ever by the Navy. But yes I understand your overall point.

EF hasn't had much export success, 100 or so planes, and scored badly on tests in comparison to a pier country making their own plane.

Failure imo considering the country resources behind it.

For us a program is a success when it allows:
    • To maintain the independence of France from the point of view of strategic technologies
    • And provide our armies with the weapons they need
    • And not to spend more than with cooperation programs

 Which again means that the EF is a success, because it's undeniably one of the best modern fighters on the market, with high production and at least for Europe export rates.

    Anyway, back to AMCA.
