Anna Hazare hunger strike undermines democracy, says Rahul Gandhi | World news | guardian.co.uk

The scion of India's most powerful political family has praised a reform activist for galvanising anger against corruption but condemned his hunger strike as "a dangerous precedent for a democracy".

The comments by top ruling party MP Rahul Gandhi were his first foray into the government's standoff with Anna Hazare since the 74-year-old activist began a fast 10 days ago that has brought tens of thousands of supporters fed up with endemic corruption into the streets.

Gandhi's speech came a day after an emotional appeal by the prime minister, Manmohan Singh, for Hazare to end his hunger strike, and signalled a government attempt to take control of the corruption debate after nearly a week of flailing.

Hazare had demanded parliament pass his stringent version of a bill creating a government watchdog. He appeared to slightly soften his stance on Thursday after Singh offered to have MPs debate several proposed drafts of the bill, including his.

Hazare said he would consider ending his fast if lawmakers discussed some of his demands – including low-level bureaucrats and state officials being under the watchdog's jurisdiction and a pledge of greater transparency.

On Friday parliament officials were trying to work out procedures for introducing the competing bills.

Gandhi made a speech in parliament thanking Hazare for articulating Indians' anger at corruption but called his hunger strike a "tactical incursion" into government functioning aimed at undoing the checks and balances of parliament. "Today the proposed law is against corruption. Tomorrow the target may be something less universally heralded. It may attack the plurality of our society and democracy," he said.

Gandhi said Hazare's protest gave the false impression that the creation of a strong watchdog would end graft in the country. "There are no simple solutions to eradicate corruption," he said, proposing new policies including government funding of elections and parties, transparency in government contracts, tax reform and better regulation of the land and mining sectors, which are a big source of graft.

"To eradicate corruption demands a far deeper engagement and sustained commitment from each one of us."

Gandhi is thought of as a possible future prime minister.

I support Anna but what RG's saying is true. Thankfully we have an Anna to lead us on Lokpal, but if tomorrow, say, Ramdev wanted to lead something similar and hold parliament hostage to ban Coca Cola, build Ram Mandir etc. then it'll be a bad precedent.

I don't understand this media frenzy about Rahul's speech. What is so great about reading a written speech? If he is an out of ordinary orator like Obama.. yes.. everyone will have to take a note of his speech. There's nothing new to his speech apart from usual political rhetorics. & now we have pimp media & congressi chamchas acting like cheerleaders!!

Earlier i thought Congress and it's leaders are corrupt. MMS is honest. Now, I have serious doubt. So much corruption happened in last few years and he didn't said anything. Yes, He is Puppet but he is PM also. he should resign. He lost all his creditability. It's better to fail by dignity rather than pass by fraud.

Sir, What is the difficulty in understanding it ? How can you expect from somebody, to cut the hands which feeds them.
