EU impasse on sharing burden of migrants weighs on Merkel
FRANK JORDANS,Associated Press 1 hour 30 minutes ago
    [IMG]
BERLIN (AP) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Saturday that there's no solution yet to the problem of how to fairly share the burden of migration in the European Union, an issue that has weighed on Berlin's relations with other members of the 28-nation bloc ever since the migrant influx of 2015.

The impasse has given ammunition to Merkel's domestic critics, who have railed against Germany's decision to take in hundreds of thousands of asylum-seekers over the past two years even as other European countries closed their borders to migrants.

Merkel, who is running for a fourth term in September's general election, said the issue would be raised at an EU summit in Malta on Friday, but downplayed hopes for a breakthrough.

"I wouldn't spread too much optimism," she said in a weekly podcast published Saturday.

"We have to insist that everybody shows a bit of solidarity when it comes to distribution (of migrants)," Merkel said, adding this could include contributing to border security and development aid.

"How this will look exactly is something I can't say at this point," she said. "The issue isn't resolved yet."

Members of Merkel's Christian Democratic Union overwhelmingly voted Saturday to nominate her as the party's candidate in the far northeast of Germany, though support dropped from 100 percent in 2013 to just under 96 percent this year. Merkel has won the seat at every election since 1990.

This year she faces a challenge in her constituency from the local leader of the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany party, which is expected to enter federal parliament for the first time in the Sept. 24 vote. Even if Merkel failed to win the constituency directly she would likely enter parliament under Germany's electoral system , which allocates about half of all seats based on the votes each party receives.

Stop Operation Soros’ movement begins in Macedonia

A new initiative, Stop Operation Soros (SOS), dedicated to countering the influence of American billionaire activist George Soros, has been launched in Macedonia.
In a press conference on Tuesday, the founders of the group called on all “free-minded citizens,” regardless of ethnicity or religion, to join them in the “fight against one-mindedness in the civil sector, which is devised and led by George Soros,” the Vecer newspaper reported. The movement says it will first focus on uncovering ‘subversive’ activities by Soros-funded NGOs.

According to Nikola Srbov, a columnist for pro-government news portal Kurir and co-founder of SOS, Soros-funded NGOs have monopolized civil society in Macedonia and used their position to suppress dissenting views.

“We've witnessed the takeover of the entire civil sector and its abuse and instrumentalization to meet the goals of one political party. That is unacceptable and goes beyond the principles of civic organizing,” Srbov said at the press conference.

“The Open Society Foundation, operating under the Soros umbrella, used its funding and personnel to support violent processes in Macedonia. It has monopolized the civil society sector, pushing outside any organization which disagrees with the Soros ideology,” he stated.

Another co-founder, Cvetin Cilimanov, editor-in-chief of the state-run MIA news agency, accused Soros’s Open Society Foundations of undermining Macedonian sovereignty by working not only with the opposition center-left SDSM party, but also with outside interests. By cooperating with foreign embassies and organizations such as USAID, Cilimanov believes Soros-backed groups have interfered in the political process of Macedonia.

“This is unacceptable and has largely contributed to a feeling in the public that the traditional relations of partnership Macedonia enjoyed with some countries are being undermined,” Cilimanov told journalists.

A third founder of the initiative and editor-in-chief of the Republika news portal, Nenad Mircevski, declared that the group would work towards the “de-Soros-ization” of Macedonia, echoing a speech made by former prime minister and leader of the ruling VMRO-DPMNE party Nikola Gruevski in December. In the speech, Gruevski accused foreign powers and Soros-backed organizations of meddling in Macedonian politics.

Opposition figures have expressed concern at the rhetoric used by Gruevski, fearing the start of a crackdown on dissent and advocacy groups.

The Open Society Foundation (OSF) was set up by Hungarian-born Soros between the mid-1980s to early 1990s with the stated aim of helping former Eastern bloc countries transition from communism. However, aside from its support for progressive causes such as drug policy reform, the OSF has also been involved in political activities and Soros publically supported the violent overthrow of the legitimately-elected government in Ukraine during the ‘Euromaidan’ revolution. This has earned him the ire of Russian authorities, which in 2015 banned Soros and his foundations as a threat to national security.

Soros and his foundations have come under scrutiny elsewhere as well. In an interview with the internet portal 888.hu in December, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that 2017 would bring about “the extrusion of George Soros and the forces symbolized by him.” Orban has accused Soros of undermining European borders and values by helping facilitate the flow of refugees and asylum seekers from the Middle East and elsewhere. During a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything), WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange also blasted the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, funded by Soros, for focusing “exclusively on negative stories about Russia and former Soviet states.”

Sweden changes its language for immigrants

The Swedes believe that changing the language will help immigrants find jobs, and that they will start flocking to the unemployment office now that they can speak freely, with an accent.

The state-owned staffing company Lernia, on January 31 launched a new Swedish language standard to bring people with poor Swedish skills into the labor market, reports Östran.

The idea behind changing the official Swedish, is so that immigrants more easily can enter the labor market. The plan is also that companies and organizations should start using the new Swedish standard, with an accent, as a voice on their answering machines and voice services, writes Östran.

    - National Swedish has been a standard for how people should speak, so-called "flawless Swedish", but for us linguists nothing is right or wrong, says Mikael Parkvall, a linguist who helped Lernia to develop the new Swedish standard.

Parkvall believes that there is no flawless Swedish and therefore he wants to mix the existing dialects and accents.

Ina Tzacheva, Training Manager at Lernia, is enthusiastic about the project and believes that there is a labor shortage in both Sweden and Europe. Therefore, she believes that the language must be relativized so that immigrants can more easily enter the labor market.

    - We want to focus on competence, not on the language or how it sounds, she says to Östran.

French Soldier Shoots Machete-Wielding Attacker in 'Terrorist in Nature' Incident in Paris
DAVID CAPLAN,Good Morning America 10 minutes ago
    [IMG]
A French soldier on duty at the Carrousel du Louvre shopping mall in Paris opened fire Friday morning on a machete-wielding man who attempted to attack a group of soldiers and police officers, according to police.

French Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve described the attack as "terrorist in nature," and has opened a terror investigation. There is a significant presence of soldiers in the French capital since the country is in an extended state of emergency until July 2017.

Paris Police Chief Michel Cadot said the man, armed with a machete and shouting "Allahu Akbar" (God is great" in Arabic), launched himself at soldiers and police officers.

One of the soldiers shot the attacker five times, seriously wounding him in the stomach, Cadot said.

Cadot said the attacker was also carrying two backpacks but they were later found not to contain any explosives.

One soldier had a minor scalp injury, said Cadot.

A spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior, speaking at the scene, said a second person had been arrested at the scene and their "possible connection" to the incident was being investigated. It was not clear if this person had a direct connection to the attacker.

France's Ministry of the Interior initially tweeted in French that a "serious" security incident occurred near the Louvre Museum.

The area surrounding the Louvre was evacuated and about 250 visitors to the museum were kept in secure parts of the facility. They were to be evacuated in small groups after the necessary security checks.

A photo posted to Twitter (below) illustrated how traffic on Rue de Rivoli was brought to a standstill following the attack.

As of 10:22 a.m. local time, Paris transit officials tweeted that the Palais Royal Louvre Museum subway stop was closed due to a "security measure."

Europe: The Struggle for Supremacy, 1453 to present. - Brendan Simms

"The foreign ministers of France, Germany, Italy and the BeNeLux countries agreed to form a customs union known as the "common market" and to integrate the transport and civil atomic energy sectors.

Britain which was not a member of the Coal and Steel Community, tried in vain to push a much looser free trade association. It argued that further economic union would divide Western Europe and, far from containing Bonn, would actually, in the words of one offocial provide 'a means of re-establishing the hegemony of Germany'"

And they really couldn't find a single country in Europe in a worse state. Like say France, with higher debt and deficit as of 2016. Worse stock exchange metrics too. Unemployment twice as high. Or Greece. Or Spain. Or Portugal. Or Belgium. Or those countries running -ve interest rates to try grow.

Maybe we'd be richer if we didn't have 600,000 unemployed Eu citizens living here, as of 2012.

If we seem poorer it's because we're looking after other nations' people instead of our own.
