Army hunts for new sniper rifle to replace Draganov
By Manu Pubby, ET Bureau | Updated: 8 Dec, 2016, 01:39 hrs IST

Indian Army is hunting for a new sniper rifle for the infantry which will have considerably more range, fire power and accuracy than the existing inventory, giving soldiers on the borders an edge over the enemy.

Proposals have been invited from global manufacturers to present modern sniper rifles that can take down targets at a range of 1200 metres with highly accurate 8.6 mm bullets – a new standard which has much more stopping power than the 7.62 mm rounds being used at present.

In a request for information, the Army has spelt out its need for over 5,000 new sniper rifles — to be assigned to infantry units that are primarily stationed along the border — and the specifications mean that these would have 50% more range than the currently used Russian Dragunov rifles.

The extra range can be the difference between life and death on the border, particularly on the line of control where soldiers are posted within visual range of each other in mountainous terrain. The escalation in violence on the border has hastened several procurement plans of the Army.

There have been at least three cases of fatal casualties on the Indian side through sniper fire in the past few months. The request for information is the first stage of procurement and tenders are likely to be issued by June next year. The Army has also asked manufacturers for information on whether the rifles required can be manufactured inIndia as part of a joint venture or through a transfer of license.

This information is needed for the Army to ‘categorise’ the purchase. As per the new procurement policy, only those weapon systems that cannot be made in India would be procured from international sources.

In the case of the sniper rifle, however, the numbers required may not be adequate to produce the weapon in India in a cost beneficial manner. The Army has been trying to procure a new set of weapons for the infantry — the largest warfighting arm of the military.

Yeah yeah, remind me in 10 years when this procurement is STILL going on and on to its 3rd/4th iteration. The IA just doesn't know how to/can't buy ANYTHING especially not through open bidding and competitive trails. The IA likes to make big claims about transforming themselves into modern/lethal force with cutting edge tech but it has taken them the best part of a decade to get 1/5th of the quantity of the BPJs required by them. Remember F-INSAS? WTF did those clowns do with that?

I can't see much happening here other than the usual trail/scandal/cancellation/re-tender circus.

BSF uses a license produced NTW20 in a Sniper role. not a slouch either, most of BSF retaliatory damage comes from this puppy, so much so, even in diplomatic back channels it was requested from the other side in not using them as CBM...

I would prefer multi Sniper rifle solutions in the army, a large quantity system preferably a 22" heavy free floated barrel with a two stage trigger chambered in the either 6.5 gren or the 6.8 spc, whichever is chosen by the army as the new primary caliber for it's battle rifle.
the second sniper rifle would depend on the MMG that army chooses, if it chooses the KORD, then the sniper rifle should be the NTW20/Vidhwansak. If it goes with a .50bmg system, then it should look at a M88 Barrett's newest avatar.
This should be the back bone of the inventory, special forces should be free to choose, .300 winmag, .338 Lapua Magnum, 6.5 creedmoor, .408 cheytac, 7.62x51N. etc.

    According to this link - http://www.defensenews.com/articles/india-hunts-overseas-for-sniper-rifles ...

AI (UK), OBR (Poland), SAKO (Finland), DSR (Germany) and PGW (Canada) were not included in the RFI.

Let's keep the rifles you mentioned as the bidders from Armalite, Barrett, Blaser Jagdwaffen, & Kalashnikov (Izhmash). That still leaves us with -

Steyr Mannlicher SSG 08 (.338 version)

    PGM Precision PGM338
    [IMG]

    Israel Weapon Industries DAN .338
    [IMG]

SIG Sauer RTAC2-H27B-338 (only SIG-made SR in 338 I could find)

I still don't have any idea what KBP by itself has on offer chambered in .338 Lapua. Nexter has the FR F2, but it's only available in 7.62x51mm.
