    This was an established trade route since ancient times.

    Of course, these days, thanks to the Somalian piracy problem which suddenly cropped up in 2005, nobody dares to ply these routes.
    Geo politically speaking, there are multiple entities who gain by preventing trade between India and Africa, out of these, many of them also have the heft to initiate and sustain lawlessness and poverty in Somalia and neighbouring countries, while they profit from the drug trade and insurance pay offs from hijackings.
    The day these mineral rich African nations are depleted of their natural resources will be the day they get "democracy", until then these poor people will continue to be inflicted with violent civil wars and hunger.
