Bangladesh to buy Chinese corvettes and submarines

The prime minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, said her government has made a decision to purchase two corvettes and two submarines from China during a visit to the naval academy at Chittagong on Dec. 21, according to the local Dhaka Tribune.

The two Type 056 frigates are currently under construction in China, the prime minister said, and both are likely to enter service next year.

Last year, the Bangladesh Navy also announced that it would buy two Ming-class submarines from China. Hasina said the two subs will be commissioned in 2016. She also said the navy will play an important role defending the country's natural resources such as oil and gase in the Bay of Bengal.

For India, the sale of Chinese warships to Bangladesh raises concerns of China projecting its maritime power into the Indian Ocean. Previous unconfirmed reports had suggested that Bangladesh had given up the idea of purchasing Chinese submarines due to pressure from New Delhi. Hasina's speech at the naval academy shows that the original plan remains unchanged.

"Why would Bangladesh need submarines? This decision by the government there and the ongoing strife in the country is a matter of concern for us," a senior Indian naval officer told the Times of India. "We also suspect that Chinese submarines are sneaking into Indian territorial waters in the Bay of Bengal region, though none have been detected as yet." For India it symbolizes a closer military-to-military relationship between another of its neighboring states and China. Pakistan is one of China's closest allies and there are suggestions Beijing is eyeing Sri Lanka as a potential partner for naval bases. PLA Navy submarines stopped at Colombo at least twice this year.

"China has been making steady inroads into India's neighbourhood and weaning away the neighbouring nations by providing financial assistance and military hardware," Ashwani Gupta wrote in an article for India's Center for Land Warfare Studies.

1.Our armed forces have been built up almost entirely by China since 1975. Much more has been on offer by PRC butthecurrent BAL govt has been going slow.
    2. "A senior naval officer" is surely talking through his hat. There is no strife in BD.

1.We know what we're doing.Potential threat analysis is done by all nations. We have paid a very heavy price to earn independence. We are not going to let our guards down.
    2. Lemme ask you, does India think we are threat to her security?

Mate India never consider bangladesh as threat , the only challenge we face is internal security , pakistan sponsored terror group and China

Agreed a sovereign nation has right to buy from any country based on it's threat perception, india should open up it's naval defence market to export to topple china from doing business in it's backyard private shipyard like pipanav , ABG , L&T can play huge role

A new corvette ordered by the Bangladesh Navy was launched on November 30th at the China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Company (CSOC)'s Wuchang Shipyard in Wuhan, China. CSOC is part of the part of the State Shipbuilding Corporation, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC). The corvette nammed Shadhinota (meaning "Independent") with hull number F111 is based on the Chinese Navy Type 056 Corvette (Jiangdao class).

The "Independent" is one of two vessels ordered from China by Bangladesh.

According to a Chinese MOD statement: This will become the Bangladeshi navy's most advanced warship, and be a real boost to its coastal defence capability. 25 knots sailing speed, anti-radar design, highly adaptable to weather and oceanic conditions, and decked out with powerful weapons. The frigate "Independent" is made to be an all-rounder.

"We believe this ship has very good cost performance. It can serve to protect the sovereignty and interests of a country out at sea. It can patrol, escort, protect fishing boats and conduct law enforcement," said Yang Zhigang, president of China Shipbuilding Industry Co..

"We made a new ship form. It's cross-section looks like a deep Vee. Compared to the traditional round bilge hull form, it improves the performance of the ship when there are waves, guaranteeing high sailing speed in unfavorable oceanic condition," said Sun Lianfei, chief designer of China Shipbuilding Industry Co..

Shadhinota retains most of the sensor and weapon systems found on board Chinese Navy Type 056 corvettes:
    » 4x C-803 (export version of YJ-83) Anti-ship missiles (2 launchers with 2 missiles each)
    » 1x FL-3000N (export version of AJK-10 / HQ-10) Surface to air missile launcher (8x missiles)
    » 1x H/PJ-26 76mm main gun (similar to Russian AK-176)
    » 2x H/PJ-17 30mm dual mode (auto/manual) remote controlled naval turret

The Bangladesh Navy corvette however will be fitted with one Type 730 CIWS and two Type 3200 ASW rocket launchers will replace the two triple torpedo launchers

Your 8 Mig-29's are airworthy solely due to Indian help.

Your BGB is trained by India and other countries but India is one of the countries training them.

You may not have purchased a complete weapon or platform but BD has purchased individual equipment units.
