Why can I not post elsewhere other than in this forum?

Also, on topic, van Persie will stay, we will sign a RB/CB/CM/Winger and a Striker.

Which formation to play depends on your strengths and also the opposition

    4-2-3-1
It is a very balanced formation, with 2 Central Defenders, 2 Full backs who attack and overlap the wingers.
Two midfielders (holding and Central midfielder) 3 attacking players with 2 in wings (wingers) and one attacking midfielder or Forward and the lone Striker , this formation is also in a way the 4-5-1 with the midfielders and wingers (2 and 3 ) combined to show 5.
This is a safe formation where the teams control the midfielder, the full backs overlap the wingers and the wingers move in to provide nos when attacking, also on counter attack, they have 2 central defenders and 2 midfielders to try and stop the counter attack.

4-4-1-1 is the more detailed 4-4-2 , this is a good formation, more on ensuring that the defence is good, This formation is good when the team wants to control the midfield, the two forwards combine to create chances.

4-3-2-1 is a defensive variation of 4-2-3-1 where there are 2 holding midfielders, this is good formation if you have new players coming in specially in the midfield or defence. if its a well set team than this is equivalent of parking the bus in front of the goal

4-4-2 is the more general formation and the detailed formation are 4-4-1-1 / 4-2-3-1/4-3-2-1/

3-5-2 puts more emphasis on capturing the midfield and to dominate, this formation works if the 3 defenders are all fast and strong (which is not the case). hence if you have defenders such as say Ayala. Ezequiel Garay, Ginter, Philip Lahm then it is good, here the there are two central defender and the third one is Sweeper (the faster one) The entire midfield and attack can be used to score more goals than the opposition can put in the attacks, the wingers here have to be wing backs and have to cover the wings in case of attacks from opposition. It is a good formation but its important to have strong players for this. Wigan playing 3-5-2 beat Manchester city in FA cup finals a few years ago.

3-4-3 Is a slight variation of 3-5-2 where the stress is there to attack and score goals at the cost of controlling the midfield, but todays game being about controlling the midfield, it would be good if the forward has the ability to play slightly behind the front two to help his team control the midfield, thus essentially 3-4-3 which worked before now becomes 3-5-2 to help control the midfield.

4-3-3 is what REAL madrid played this season to involve BBC (Bale Benzema and Rolando) and in a way 4-2-3-1 with 1 being Benz and CR7 and Bale playing through wings with Modric playing in attacking role, but the big problem was the 2 where its Toni Kroos, Toni Kroos is a good midfielder and excellent passer but he needs a strong defensive midfielder/enforcer to work with him which unforunately madrid did not realise. In Bayern he had Javi Martinez or Schweinsteiger with him and that made him excellent in his role, but then being Real Madrid, they go for the player rather than understanding how the player can be more effective.

There are few formations such as 5-3-2, it is a very defensive formation and excellent for counter attacking football. When a team is against a very very strong attacking side, the team plays defensive, and relies more on long balls to by pass the opponents and to hit them on counters.
After the brazilians were dominant with likes of Ronaldinho etc, Norway beat them 4-2 in a friendly using this formation. The norwegian scorer being Tore Andre flo. And to repeat it, they beat Brazil again 2 - 1 in a match during 1998 FIFA world cup

Thus a good formation is based on your strengths, your opponents and how you plan to play the game.

    4-1-2-3

Not an option on the poll though
The 4-2-1-3 is quite outdated / Double pivot strategy depends on the quality of your attackers.

4-1-2-3 plugs the hole and give you the high pressing option with a compact midfield.

IMHO 2-4-4 is best formation in football. Two strikers supported by midfielders who can also act as wingers. This allows them to dominate the game and move from defensive to offensive in no time. It also allows a highly mobile position changing game. The midfielders and also full backs can change their positions at will or based on how the attack/counter attack builds up.

I believe you meant 4-4-2 system
    The preferred Premier League option.
Yes its one of the best when you play direct with more team strength than individual ability. It does little to bring out the best from your marquee .

4-3-3 is the best formation which can be switched easily to several other formations during the game depending on match situation. Here key is the DM who sits at the base of Midfield triangle and the lone Striker (a target man). It can easily be switched to 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-4-1 or 4-4-2 (In few cases) by adjusting Midfield and Wingers. This is the reason Jose Mourinho (Pep also uses this as base and tinkers with it) prefers this formation as it can be easily switched without making any substitution. I am depicting the formation below, you can see the several possibilities to switch the formation if Midfield 3 are versatile enough.

There is no best formation in soccer.
It all depends on the quality of the players you have in your team and on the opponent.

    4-1-2-3.

2 central defenders and one holding midfielder.Wing defenders can move up to join attack and then holding midfielder drops back.
2 main midfielders to control possession.
3 attacking players in the front moving in or out as needed with a centre forward ideally.

4-4-2 is an very ideal formation in soccer while center forward is the best position to play.
