Snaking for hundreds of miles across the earth's surface, this spectacular picture shows one of the planet's land borders like never before.
The dramatic picture shows a bright orange line jutting across the earth, indicating the border between India and Pakistan.
The stunning image of the earth, taken from the International Space Station last month, also shows busy cities show up as bright clusters hundreds of miles apart.

The Indian government sanctioned a move to erect floodlights along the terrain separating India and Pakistan in the Gujarat sector in 2003 to prevent smuggling and arms trafficking.
In previous years the border has regularly seen attempts at infiltration by terrorists, as well as the smuggling of arms, ammunition and contraband.
In total, the Indian government hope to cover 1248 miles (2009 km) of the 1800-mile (2900 km) India-Pakistan border with floodlights.
Officials have so far erected floodlights along 286 miles (460 km) of Indian border with the Pakistan state of Punjab.
The extensive floodlighting continues for 635 miles (1022 km) across Rajasthan, 109 miles (176 km) across the Jammu international border, and 125 miles (202 km) through Gujarat.
So far 1156 miles (1861 km) of the border have been floodlit.
Plans are in place to erect a total 1269 miles (2043 km) of fencing along the nation's border.
The Indian government hope to have completely finished the floodlight operation by March 2012.
A similar fenced border zone operates along India's eastern border with Bangladesh, although it cannot be seen as vividly on images like this.
The Gujarat border region was notorious for being infiltrated until officials erected the floodlit border in 2003.
The spectacular image showing the floodlit border was taken by Expedition 28 International Space Station Crew on August 21.

Also visible on the picture as bright clusters is Lahore, Pakistan, nearest to the orange border line.
Islamabad, Pakistan, can also be seen towards the bottom of the picture, as well as New Delhi, India, at the top.

They need electrified fences... and a maintenace team that repairs these fences every couple of months... Indians have a bad habit of building things and then ignoring it until it collapses.

Indo BD border need equal attention..as early as possible..or else we would very soon see WB turning into a mini BD with a majority of illegal BD immigrants...and eventually increased infiltration of terrorist and more illegal activities.

so a nation with frequent power shortage is able to erect flood lights near the border just for one's ego?? and the indians complain for congress corruption:crazy:

pakistan is not gonna attack if there are flood lights:happy:

if something is smuggled out of pakistan i-e wheat, barley, sugar, cotton, potatoes, onions, then its the greater responsibility of pakistan to control the smugglers because ultimately its pakistan's loss and for which the pakistani consumer need to pay extra for it

    read the comments :lol::lol:

I do hope that the £280 million a year we send for aid will meet their electricity bill. When will those in power look in the mirror and realise just how stupid they really are!

So while their governments money is spend on electricity bills, our governments feed their poor?

What a waste of resources particularly when the entire country is subjucated to almost 20 hours of load shedding. Manage this utility to improve the lives of ordinary people by investing in infrastructure to create industry so that all benefit.

We couldn't care any lesser about what they think. If they suffered from cross-border terrorism, they would know better. The aid program they disburse in India isn't enforced by anyone, they do it to extract a foothold in our industries and our political system. What say about you guys? A little ironic for you to be pulling up comments about western aid, ain't it?

India has power shortage, not because of deficiency in power generation. But because of inefficiency in power transmission and distribution.
And flood lights in border not because of ego but to prevent infiltration of separatist militants and arms smuggling. Its not the wheat barley and cotton we are worried about, its the weapons.
We are just being careful with our problematic neighbor.

Are all people of Pakistan this intelligent? No...atleast we got a few sensible ones around here in IDF.

Those flood lights are not to prevent Pak from attacking, but to draw out mosquitoes, moths and other vasps. I tried my level best to match up to ur intelligence, hope it helps.:sarcastic:

Re: Border between India and Pakistan is so brightly lit it can be seen from space!!!

maybe you fell behind matching my intelligence

relating indian poverty and electricity issues, one flood light usage daily may feed one family for one day even more, so its utter foolishness to waste energy like that for just one corrupt govt's ego

did pakistan caused mumbai terror bomb blast recently??? big no, so i suggest yourself to sort out these problems

and about pakistan attacking, you are oviously low enough not to get my joke

Re: Border between India and Pakistan is so brightly lit it can be seen from space!!!

then china must do the same with india, china knows about india made problems in tibet

pakistan doesnt smuggle weapons or militants to india its obvious because ajmal kasab used fishing boat and used mumbai port, if you are so concerned make your navy strong next time but i have heard thousands of dollars worth patrol boats are rotting on mumbai shores

maybe the foolishness of india is beneficial for pakistan to look after militant smuggling from india infact at the cost of indian electricity, so cheers:cheesy:

    Talking about Pakistan?

This is what they call terrorists in Pakistan these days?
Here we just call them bastards, and yeah the floodlights are for them only.

    Really?
    Why?
    Oh..wait, it was a joke...

The issue is when a few grenades make there way into mango crates.Innocent mistake, agreed.
