Britain calls in French to hunt Russian sub lurking off Scotland - Telegraph

French patrol planes are scouring the seas off Scotland for a Russian submarine after Britain was forced to call on allies for help because it has scrapped its own sub-hunting aircraft.

A French Atlantique 2 maritime patrol plane has been searching for the submarine for at least 10 days, since the vessel was detected north of Scotland.

A Royal Navy frigate, HMS Sutherland, and a hunter killer submarine have also been sent on the search, amid fears the Russian boat could be trying to spy on a Trident nuclear deterrent sub.

Britain scrapped its own Nimrod maritime patrol aircraft after the cost cutting 2010 defence review, leading to warnings from defence chiefs that the country would be left reliant on others for aircraft to search its own waters.

Admirals have argued that filling the gap is a priority for the Government's defence review which will be unveiled on Monday.

The search for the Russian vessel intensified over the weekend, as another French Atlantique and a Canadian aircraft were both sent to RAF Lossiemouth to joint the hunt.

The Ministry of defence declined to give details of the operation, but confirmed allied planes were helping the Navy from the airbase on the Moray Firth.

The operation is the third time in only a year that Britain has called on its allies to search for a Russian submarine in the area, as Moscow has dramatically stepped up its undersea patrols.

Russian submarine patrols have risen by half in the past year and are back at levels not seen for a decade, a Senior Nato commander warned last month.

The Nimrod spy planes had been mainstays of the RAF's reconnaissance fleet since the late 1960s and had a central role in anti-submarine warfare, when they were scrapped with an upgrade programme running nine years late and £800 million over budget.

An MoD spokesman said: "We can confirm that allied maritime patrol aircraft based at RAF Lossiemouth for a limited period are conducting activity with the Royal Navy. We do not discuss the detail of maritime operations."

So 80-100 Typhoons are expected to survive which means the T1s will be gone before 2020. At least that's confirmed.

BMD is right on 126 Planes, but it's not Typhoon only. Until 2023 UK will operate
    • 7 Squadrons of 12 Typhoon ==> 84 planes
    • 24 F-35 B for Navy
    • 18 F-35 B for RAF
Total 126 Planes because at this time Tornado will be retired.

It seems very low, so perhaps there is some more Typhoon for training etc... but in this case I do not understand why they use tranche 1 as front line instead of tranche 3. There is a mystery in these announces!
Suppose that France would have announced something like that, BMD would have laugh at us.

Nope, there will be 138 F-35Bs.

Strategic Defence and Security Review 2015 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    • Personnel will be increased by 300.
    • Typhoon will be retained for an additional ten years (until 2040) and will receive upgrades. Two additional squadrons will be stood up, bringing the total number of frontline Typhoon squadrons to seven by 2025. Tranche 1 Typhoons will form these additional squadrons
    • There was a reaffirmed commitment to 138 Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning IIs (with a total of 24 available to be deployed on board the Queen Elizabeth-class carriers by 2023).[9][10]
    • Nine Boeing P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft will be ordered to plug the gap left by the retirement of the Nimrod in 2011 and the scrapping of its successor, the Nimrod MRA4.[2] The aircraft will be based at RAF Lossiemouth.[11]
    • The RPAS fleet will be doubled with the current 10 General Atomics MQ-9 Reapers to be replaced by more than 20 new armed "Protector" RPAS.[12]
    • Fourteen C-130J Hercules aircraft will remain in service alongside 22 Airbus A400M Atlas and 8 Boeing C-17 Globemaster III.
    • Fourteen Voyager air-to-air refuelling aircraft will be in service by 2025, with one fitted for transport of the Prime Minister, senior cabinet officials and the Royal Family.[13]
    • Around four Sentinel R1 will be extended in service "into the next decade", but will leave service by 2025.[14]
    • Shadow R1 will remain in service until "at least" 2030 and two more aircraft will be procured.
    • Sentry AEW1 and Rivet Joint R1 will remain in service until 2035.

    126 Typhoons + 138 F-35Bs.

There are already >120 Typhoons and there'll be two extra squadron with frontline readiness. Frontline Typhoons do not include QRA aircraft.

    Yes 138 F-35 B but not all in 2023!
UK to buy more F-35 jets, boost anti-terror budget - Osborne| Reuters
Agreed I have seen one transformation squadron by type but the number is not clear for me.

Before this SDSR ,the retirement of 53 Tranche 1 implied that the remaining Typhoon was 107. I expect that it is now 107+24= 132 with 84 Frontline.
    In 2023 I expect 24 F-35B Frontline +18 RAF/QRA
    Total plane in 2023:
    132+42 = 174

Oh sure, it will take some time to stack up 138 F-35s (2030 maybe), but the Typhoon's have been extended to 2040 with upgrades. The 24 number also represents 'frontline' not total.

Wrt Typhoons, Tr1 and Tr2 delivery is already complete and Tr3 is in progress, so there are at least 120 Typhoons in service, plus some Tr3s (10-20 at a guess, so 130-140 total, with 160 total on order).

Eurofighter Typhoon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yep, 134, as on last month:

Eurofighter Typhoon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    So eventually 160 Typhoons + 138 F-35Bs.
