Champions Trophy: India crush Pakistan by 8 wickets in final league encounter

BIRMINGHAM: Title favourites India produced yet another clinical performance as they outplayed arch-rivals Pakistan by eight wickets in a high-voltage group league encounter of the ICC Champions Trophy on Saturday.

Scorecard | Points Table | Match in Pics

In a match where there were numerous rain-interruptions, Pakistan were bundle out for 165 in 39.4 overs due to a disciplined effort by the Indian bowling unit led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who returned with figures of two for 19.

India's final revised target courtesy D/L method was 102 in 22 overs which the 'Men In Blue' achieved with 17 balls to spare as Shikhar Dhawan again blazed his way to a 41-ball-48. India thus finished group league engagements with an all-win record.

Winning the 'prestige battle' against Pakistan will certainly be a big morale-booster for Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men as they await their semi-final opponents whom they will take on in the second semi-final in Cardiff on June 20.

The win was also India's first in the Champions Trophy having lost against the same opponents in the 2004 and 2009 editions of the tournament.

With game frequently delayed by intermittent rain, India never lost sight of the target as the openers Dhawan and Rohit Sharma (18) again gave a solid start adding 58 runs for the opening stand. While Rohit was a bit subdued, there was no stopping Dhawan who repeatedly peppered the off-side field.

In all he hit five boundaries and just when a half-century was there for the taking, the Delhi lad slashed hard at one from Wahab Riaz to be caught at the deep third-man boundary. Virat Kohli (22 no) and Dinesh Karthik (11 no) ensured that there were no hiccups in the chase.

Earlier, India's bowling quartet of Bhuvneshwar, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Ishant Sharma shared the bulk of the spoils as they never really let Pakistan batsmen off the hook.

The rain probably spared Pakistan a bigger humiliation. Sharma and Dhawan were again in good touch. On an Edgbaston wicket where the Pakistan new ball bowlers, Junaid Khan and Mohammad Irfan, bend their back and extracted some pace and bounce, the batsmen looked quite at ease.

With rains looming on the horizon, the Indians were virtually racing along, scoring 45 in the mandatory powerplay of eight overs. Dhawan was in punishing mood, twice slapping Junaid in the arc between point and extra-cover.

Earlier, spin twins Ravindra Jadeja (2/30 in 8 overs)and Ravichandran Ashwin (2/35 in 8 overs) kept the Pakistan batsmen on a leash during middle overs after brilliant opening spell by Bhuvneshwar, who again produced the goods upfront.

The match which was initially reduced to 40-overs-a-side due to frequent rain interruptions saw 'Men In Blue' control proceedings right from the beginning as they bundled out their opponents in only 39.4 overs.

While Asad Shafiq (41) was the top-scorer for Pakistan, a lot of their batsmen got starts but were unable to convert into substancial score due to some impressive bowling by the quartet of Jadeja, Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar and Ishant Sharma (2/40). The bowlers produced wickets at regular intervals as Pakistan's woeful show with the bat continued.

The top-order again saw a familiar collapse. Nasir Jamshed, who has scored all his three ODI centuries against India, failed to reproduce his magic this time.

The left-handed opener was circumspect and enjoyed a 'life' when on 1. Ruled out leg before by umpire Richard Kettleborough, the batsman was saved by the DRS but his innings was cut short by a beauty from Bhuvneshwar.

Bhuvneshwar got the ball to swing both ways and found the edge of Jamshed's tentative prod which saw Suresh Raina complete an easy catch at second slip. Jamshed scored just 2 runs off nine balls.

Kamran Akmal and Mohammed Hafeez consolidated the innings but a steady downpour send the players back in the pavilion.

The 46-run second wicket stand was over immediately after resumption. Hafeez paid offered a loose stroke to an innocuous Kumar delivery to edge to a diving Dhoni. Hafeez was out for a 31-ball 27 that was laced with five fours, two of them off successive Umesh Yadav deliveries.

India (Ind) vs Pakistan (Pak): India now set to chase 102 runs in 22 overs against Pakistan

Yes fairly one sided match. Sikhar dhwan again batted splendidly. And he destroyed the Pakistani bowling.

I loved the smile of Shikhar Dhawan, after ripping through Pakistani bowling attack.

Champions Trophy: India down Pakistan in a one-sided dampener
More than their skill, it was the patience of players on either side that was tested in cold, windy and wet Birmingham on Saturday. As many as four rain interruptions resulted in a stop-start affair that saw Pakistan's innings reduced to 40 and India's target thrice revised, and by the time India overhauled a Duckworth/Lewis target of 102 in the 20th over there were far fewer spectators present than when the match began under clearer skies.
Rain was always on the cards, but what panned out was hardly befitting of a marquee clash between two fierce rivals that resulted in a packed Edgbaston, never mind that the match was a dead rubber in terms of consequence on the ICC Champions Trophy. Adding to the overall sense of gloom was Pakistan's insipid performance that meant they were winless in the tournament.
Pakistan's feeble batting was the reason for their elimination earlier in the week and this sorry trend continued. Their innings - there were two delays due to rain - ended at 165 in 39.4 overs after disciplined bowling from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin, coupled with some smart usage of the DRS, set the tone for India's dominance. Set a revised D/L target of 168 in 40 overs, which became 157 in 36 and then 102 in 22, India won by eight wickets with 17 balls remaining to make it three wins in a row and avoid a hat-trick of losses to Pakistan in the tournament.

Set a revised Duckworth/Lewis target of 102 in 22 overs, India rode on Shikhar Dhawan to win by eight wickets in a rain-curtailed affair in wet Birmingham.

MS Dhoni's decision to field with an unchanged side was influenced by the fact that rain was forecast for later in the day, and it was vindicated by a tidy effort from his chief wicket-takers. Nasir Jamshed has been one of just two batsmen in the runs in England - the second being the captain, Misbah-ul-Haq - and came into this match averaging 135.33 against India but failed to make an impression. Having been relieved by a review against an lbw decision by umpire Richard Kettleborough off Umesh Yadav's first ball, Jamshed fell for 2 when he nicked Bhuvneshwar to second slip (4 for 1).
It took Pakistan 35 deliveries to find the boundary, and then they hit four in five balls: Mohammad Hafeez elegantly drove Yadav past extra cover and then pulled the next between midwicket and square leg; first ball of the next over, Akmal slammed Bhuvneshwar past square leg and after a single, Hafeez squirted an under edge to the fine leg boundary. What Bhuvneshwar conceded in his first six overs Ishant Sharma leaked in his first 12 balls as Pakistan sensed a weak link and gathered momentum. They took 43 for 1 off the Powerplay, 16 of which came off Ishant.
With Pakistan 50 for 1 in 12 overs, play was halted for 15 minutes due to a brief shower. Though the ground did not soak in much water during that brief interruption, Pakistan's batsmen came out rather soaked. Immediately after the delay Hafeez (27) nibbled Bhuvneshwar to a diving Dhoni and moments later Akmal (21) heaved at Ashwin's seventh delivery and was held by Virat Kohli at leg slip after the edge rebounded off Dhoni's thigh. It was palpable which side had been adversely effected by the holdup in play.

This Match was a complete waste. Totally one-sided. Pakistan is responsible for ending the charm of Indo-Pak cricket match.
