    China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) has successfully integrated and launched a new precision guided missile (PGM) on its Cai Hong 5 (Rainbow 5, or CH-5) strike-capable, medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (MALE UAV), Jane’s sources have confirmed.

    The latest test was staged out of an undisclosed airport in the northwestern province of Gansu during the morning of 21 September, with CASC engineers successfully deploying a new 80 kg-class PGM – carrying a blast fragmentation warhead – via lock-on before launch (LOBL) targeting protocols from a production-model CH-5 at a launch altitude of 11,482 ft.

    Further details of the new PGM were not disclosed, although it is understood that the latest effort also enabled engineers to further test and fine-tune the CH-5’s electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) payload as well as its weapons targeting and rail-mounted payload release mechanisms.

    “We demonstrated the CH-5’s ability to win the initiative in any battlefield with its reconnaissance and strike ability, and our latest success exemplifies the maturity of our advanced products,” a company spokesperson told Jane’s .

    Company sources also revealed to Jane’s that the 45 kg-class AR-1 semi-active laser (SAL) anti-armour missile was successfully integrated and certified for delivery aboard the CH-5 in August.

      Zero Zero Robotics (Privately held)
      This Chinese-based drone manufacturer builds consumer-friendly robots and is known for its $500 Hover Camera Passport drone, which is the first Embedded Artificial Intelligence powered mass-consumer flying camera of its kind. It is a lightweight drone specifically designed for taking selfies, and is sold exclusively by Apple via both its online and physical retail stores.

      The latest news buzzing around the world of Zero Zero Robotics is that Snap Inc., the parent company of Snapchat, is reportedly in talks to acquire the Chinese drone manufacturer for between $150 and $200 million, according to CNBC.

      3D Robotics (Privately held)
      Based out of Berkeley, California, 3D Robotics focuses mostly on autonomous drones (like its drone SOLO) with GPS point planning, otherwise known as a smart drone. The company focuses on products for everyday exploration and business applications, as well as aerial photography.

      3D Robotics claims to be the smartest and most technologically advanced drone company in the world. 3D Robotics developed the first true “Follow Me” technology in the drone industry through which drones can stay right with you wherever you go, automatically keeping the camera centered on you to capture your every move.

      Yuneec (Privately held)
      Headquartered in Kunshan Jiangsu, China, Yuneec is the world leader in electric aviation. In 2014, Yuneec introduced the world’s first ready-to-fly, out-of-the-box drone: The Typhoon Q500 quadcopter, This made the company and its products very popular amongst professionals and hobbyists.

      DJI Innovations and Yuneec collectively are known as the Apple and Samsung of the drone world, and have been in a few public tech battles and legal proceedings.

      Parrot SA (EPA: PARRO)[​IMG]Best Buy


      Parrot, headquartered in Paris, is a new entrant into the UAV/quadcopter market.

      In a short amount of time, Parrot has seized a large part of the commercial and civil UAV/quadcopter market with the AR.Drone and its successor the AR.Drone 2.0, a mid- range hobby drone with integrated FPV system controlled by a smartphone app.

      Hubsan (Privately held)
      Set up in 2010 in China, Hubsan manufactures drones used by hobbyist and commercial photography. It is also the maker of the world’s smallest drone, Nano Q4 wit a flying weight of only 11.5 grams.

    Large unmanned aircraft with ton-level capacity debuts

    The world's first unmanned freight aircraft with a ton-level capacity completed its first test flight, reported China News Service.

    This unmanned freight aircraft, named AT200, was co-developed by the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other institutes. It performed well in the 26-minute test flight in Pucheng, Northwest China's Shaanxi provinceon, on Thursday .

    The homegrown AT200 is 11.84 meters long and 4.04 meters high, with a maximum takeoff weight of 3.4 tons. With a cargo space of 10 cubic meters, the plane can carry 1.5 tons of cargo.

    According to the research and development team, the AT200 is equipped with a advanced control system, which makes it easier to manipulate the aircraft and reduce the freight cost.

    Key technical breakthroughs have been achieved during the development and manufacturing of the plane, which is able to fly at 313 kilometers per hour for about eight hours.

    The AT200 is also capable of taking off and landing in rough terrains, such as mountains and islands.

    The research and development team said they are working to put AT200 into commercial operation soon.
