Recently in Guizhou equipment industry exibition, the China Guiyang Liyang company booth shows the domestic turbo fan 13 engine model and some information. Turbo fan 13, referred as WS-13, is a medium-thrust military turbo fan aircraft engine used to fit on the J-31 stealthy fighter.

The most close reference model of Chinese J-20 is American F-22 canard version, not the outdated Russian Mig 1.44

The main reason of J-20 still to retain the pelvic fin is not to ensure the aircraft stable, but to block the radar wave from the side to the tail nozzle.

With a smaller front and bottom reflection signal strength increases, resistance and weight increase at the expense, J-20 can avoid a huge radar signal reflection on the lateral tail which will lead to complete failure of overall stealth design.

If the J-20 has a two-way nozzle like F22, the engine nozzle can be completely masked in the tail support range, there will be no need for pelvic fins .

Because the WS- 15 is still in research, so J-20 stealth level theoretically still has a great room to evolve into J-20B. Whether it can make up such shortcoming and close to the stealth level of F22, it is up to the WS-15 turbofan engine development and the high temperature titanium alloy development.

Images show China’s J-20 possibly equipped with new engines

Images have emerged on Chinese online forums showing what appears to be China’s J-20 'fifth-generation' fighter aircraft possibly equipped with new turbofan engines.

The images show the engines featuring revised nozzles, possibly for thrust vectoring, which may be used to power a new version of the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) J-20 emerged on Chinese online forums showing what appears to be China's J-20 'fifth-generation' fighter equipped with possible new turbofan engines. The most distinctive visible feature of this turbofan is its pointed nozzle petals. (Via Dingsheng webpage.)

Some of the most distinctive visible features of the turbofans include pointed nozzle petals designed to increase stealth: a feature that is characteristic of the US Pratt & Whitney F135 turbofan engine that powers the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

Although variants of Chinese Shenyang-Liming WS10 Taihang engines were used to power J-20 prototypes, the production variant of the aircraft appears to have been powered by a version of the Russian Saturn AL-31FN turbofan, feeding concerns that initial versions of China’s only ‘fifth-generation’ fighter could remain dependent on Russian engines and associated technology.

In March, state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) stated the aircraft had already entered service with the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF), although it is thought that only small numbers of the aircraft have been produced.

According to information revealed at the Airshow China 2014 exhibition in Zhuhai, the Liming Engine Manufacturing Corporation developed an improved variant of the WS10 turbofan that might have a thrust of more than 140 kN.

In late December 2016, the Hong Kong newspaper Ming Pao reported that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) planned to initially acquire up to 100 J-20A variants, expected to be powered by an advanced version of the WS-10 or the AL-31 engine.

Ming Pao also reported that the PLA would then purchase up to 400 of J-20B version, expected to be equipped with a turbofan thought to generate a thrust of 145 kN, enabling a ‘super-cruise’ speed capability without afterburner.

China's J-20 fighter jet may get homemade engine

    http://www.ecns.cn/military/2017/09-08/272653.shtml

Most experts and netizens said they believe photos posted online of China's J-20 fighter jets show homemade Taihang engines have replaced their Russian-made counterparts.

A report released by thepaper.cn on Wednesday said the new engine is the Taihang based on its appearance on the online photos.

The J-20 used to be outfitted with the Russia-made AL-31F engine, according to the report, but the homemade engines could be mass-produced.

"It is necessary for the J-20 to use homemade engines. This way, the fighter jet will be completely developed and manufactured in China," Huang Jun, a professor at Beihang University, told the Global Times on Thursday.

According to the report, the insufficient supply of the Russian engines could have led to the change, since orders for the homemade engine also come from overseas, while the price of the Russian engine has been increased from $3 million to $ 5 million each.

"The Taihang engine's performance is nearly as good as the AL-31F. However, being new, the Taihang lacks the maturity of the Russian one," said Huang.

The report added it is much more complicated to change the engine of the fourth generation of J-20s than the second and the third one due to adjustments to the fourth generation's air inlet and engine compartment, among others.

The J-20 is expected to undergo another engine change with the homemade WS-15, which is currently being developed, said the report of thepaper.cn.
