The Chinese naval formation – consisting of the destroyer Changchun, guided-missile frigate Jingzhou and supply vessel Chaohu – conducted the drill under real combat conditions, state-run Xinhua reported on Friday.

The fleet conducted strikes against “enemy” ships and replenished vessels with fuel and drinking water in a side-by-side manoeuvre, the report said.

It said the exercise was designed to improve the navy’s “far-ranging” abilities, but did not reveal exactly where or when the drill took place.

Chen Denan, chief of staff of the Chinese fleet, was quoted as saying that various drills under complicated circumstances were conducted to improve battle readiness.

Xinhua said the fleet was on a half-year friendship tour of Asia, Europe, Africa and Oceania, and had conducted joint exercises with navies from 10 other countries since it started its voyage on April 23.

The navies of India, the United States and Japan have also recently completed their annual Malabar exercises in the Indian Ocean.

The PLA Navy drill was conducted as China and India continued to lock horns in a border dispute in Doklam, an area lying between Tibet’s Chumbi valley to the north, Bhutan’s Ha valley to the east and India’s Sikkim state to the west.

Shanghai Hudong Shipyard on September 8 launched the 7th 815A electronic surveillance ship.

    Type 815A electronic surveillance ship

Type 815 was formerly named as Dong-Diao (东调, meaning "East Investigate") (Pennant #232), but subsequently, the name was changed to North Star after new naming convention adopted by PLAN. After entering service in the latter half of 1999, the ship went through major upgrade several years later, with parabolic antennas replaced by three large radomes. In addition to collecting electronic intelligence, this class is also tasked to perform ballistic missile tracking. There is a hangar for a helicopter. Specification:[1]

      • Length (m): 130
      • Width (m): 16.4
      • Draft (m): 6.5
      • Displacement (t): 6000
      • Speed (kt): 20
      • Crew: 250
      • Armament: 1 twin 37 mm, 2 twin 25 mm

In January 2017, an improved Type 815G entered service with Chinese navy. Designated as Type 815A,[5] this further improved Type 815 can be visually distinguished from earlier Type 815G in the radome above the pilothouse: the radome of Type 815A is a cylinder with flat top surface,[6] while the top of cylinder radome of earlier Type 815G has a semi-sphere.[7]

Source: Recent interview with Prof. MA Weiming shown on CCTV's <Focus Report>.
    http://tv.cctv.com/2017/05/30/VIDElSeSLderAFlcnlzhUzhn170530.shtml (starting at 8:00)

It was reported in the interview that (as claimed by Prof. MA and the narrator):
    • China was the first in the world to have successfully developed Medium Voltage DC Integrated Electric Systems.
    • Their progress in this field is 10+ years ahead of everyone else, including the US.
    • They already won multiple awards with key IEP technologies (did not specify), now they're applying for another national award with the IEP project. One of MA's students is the project lead.
    • The key purpose of their Naval Integrated Electric System is to allow the use of high energy weapons on ships, not just to improve noise, maneuverability, or efficiency. Those side benefits do exist, but the key purpose is to use high energy weapons on ships.
    • During the interview MA pointed to a device explaining that it was their first project that has been ahead of the world. He did not explain what the device is, but from the looks of it, it is fairly clear that the device is a shaftless electric pump propulsion system for submarines.
    • MA did not mention anything specific about the 095, he did not claim that whatever model will or will not be quieter than whatever else. What he did say was that they're ahead of the world in regards to this technology, and he did say it is something that will be used on their next generation nuclear submarine. He also said the tech is already being applied, implying that construction for said submarine has begun (if not completed).
