Chinese CSU 152 MBT (China), MBTs and medium tanks

    Development

Since the early 1990s China has been developing a new Main Battle Tank (MBT), which, if and when fielded, would make it the most powerful vehicle of its type in the world. In 1992 China started the 9289 MBT project under the leadership of the China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) but this was stopped in 1996 before the first prototype had been completed and started its trials programme. In 1999 a new 9958 project (which also includes other land, air and sea programmes) was started that took in elements of the earlier 9289 project. The new MBT is called the CSU 152 heavy combat vehicle and is understood to have commenced its trials programme in 2003. As of early 2012 no firm information as to the current status of the Chinese CSU 152 MBT had been released.

    Description

No firm details of the CSU 152 have been released but it is considered probable that the crew compartment is towards the front of the vehicle with main armament in the middle and the power pack at the rear.It is expected that the baseline chassis will be of all-welded steel armour to which an advanced armour package will be fitted over the frontal arc for a higher level of survivability. This could include depleted uranium (as fitted to some late production US General Dynamics Land Systems M1A1/M1A2 MBT), ceramic armour and/or various types of combination armour. China has also fitted some of its MBTs with Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA) to provide a higher level of protection against anti-tank weapons fitted with a HEAT warhead. It is believed that the new MBT will be armed with a 152 mm gun, which will be fed by an automatic loader.

This would be coupled to an advanced day/thermal sighting system that will allow moving targets to be engaged while the vehicle is stationary or moving with a high first-round hit probability. The size and weight of the ammunition would require that an automatic loader be fitted. At this stage it is not certain as to whether the new MBT would have a conventional manned turret with an automatic loader in the turret bustle.Another alternative could be an externally-mounted gun with all of the crew in the hull for maximum protection. This would lower the profile of the MBT and therefore increase its survivability.

According to the Jane's article the prototypes of the tank under trial testing in 2003.Still news about induction. With a gun of that size I reckon the Tank will probably weigh around 80 tonnes. If they are really going to induct it,I will say good luck to all the bridges in China.

    Precisely.

This tank will be too heavy to be of any combat effectiveness. It'll be cumbersome to transport and
difficult to employ in combat formations in high-altitude mountanious battlefields (where even
normal 50-ton MBTs find it hard to sweat around). I think it'll only be useful as a motorized field gun
or something with some increased mobility compared to other self-propelled artillery.

if the power to weight ratio is good and ground pressure low enough then mobility won't be a problem....and i had heard some time ago that it will be significantly heavier but will have a 2100hp engine to push its ass around !!

and fact still remains.....that high-alti warfare was never a thing for tanks....but then there are always exceptions and rarities.....

Trusting the high credibility of the source , i am firm to suggest that this Tank if it ever sees production would be a marvel as it has been in development for so long. I have questions of my own about weight to power ratio , ROF , mobility etc. All we have to do is to wait and see when it rolls out of it ever does.

Thats not the tank in question. See there's "Western coalition" written in the background.

It seems this is fanboy art of some future NATO tank. Thats not the chinese tank.
