A group of Christians has requested the Centre to extend grants for pilgrimages to Jerusalem.

A delegation from the Catholic community, among them members of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee met(GPCC) Shantaram Naik, MP, on Wednesday.

GPCC General Secretary Altinho Gomes said the travel costs to Jerusalem were prohibitive and only a few people could make the journey to the Christian holy land.

Catholic pilgrims form a large part of the outbound traffic from Goa in recent years with travel agents offering special package tours to the holy land.

Demand for grant of travel subsidy to Jerusalem pilgrims

MARGAO: The Christian community from Chinchinim has submitted a memorandum to the Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik, demanding that the central government provide travel subsidy for the faithful desirous of undertaking the pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

"For the Christian and the Catholics, Jerusalem is a very significant site. The history of the Catholic religion is rooted in this place. It is here that Jesus was born, lived, carried on his sacred mission, and finally redeemed the mankind as their Saviour. It is therefore very sacred to us and a visit to this land will help us to recall the precious memories associated with the life of Jesus. The faithful would wish to be a part of this journey, (however), the costs for average faithful to undertake this pilgrimage is prohibitive," the memorandum signed by over 800 people states.

Referring to the subsidy granted by the government of India to Haj pilgrims every year, the memorandum states, "We are hardly 2% of the population and it is difficult to make our voice felt. The number of MPs from our faith is again insignificant. Therefore, we request your good self, to make effective representation to get this facility extended to the Christians as well."

The community members have also dashed off letters to all MLAs and ministers urging them to support their cause.

"In recent times, a large number of Catholics from all over India undertake pilgrimage to the Holy Land (Jerusalem) revered by the faithful. India is a secular state, but the government of India favours one minority community, granting an annual subsidy for pilgrimage to Mecca," the letters points out. Further stating the exorbitant cost of over Rs 70,000 would be reduced if the subsidy is provided, the letter stresses that the financial implications would be "negligible" as the community consists of "a miniscule population". "Some states have already made a token annual provision in this regard, and Goa government should emulate this gesture as there is a substantial Catholic population in the state," the letter adds.

Maybe a 10% increase in entry toll of Haridwar would pay for this.

If this is to be given I hope it is given only to the poor who really need it.Why there is a demand for this surprises me, as it is not compulsory for Catholics to make trips to Jerusalem.

It is not GOI's responsibility to fulfill religious desires of any section of population, irrespective of religion. If the individuals cannot afford to make the trip they should not expect other millions of tax payer to pay for their trip.

I am for abolishing spending of Govt $ on any religious trips.
