Documents recovered from the hard drives of Osama bin Laden’s hideout in Pakistan paint a mundane, if entirely surprising portrait of the terrorist.
The CIA released a trove of files (the page is intermittently unavailable) obtained from the former Al Qaeda leader’s computer in his Abbottabad compound, which the intelligence service raided in 2011. It’s been six years since the raid, and the CIA has just now released the files, which may not necessarily provide an insight into the terrorist’s psyche, but will—at the very least—be somewhat amusing.

The video games were stored on Bin Laden’s hard drive were pirated, emulated copies, and included Nintendo DS games including New Super Mario Bros., Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Metroid Prime Hunters, and Yoshi’s Island DS. The list of games also included more mature fare, like Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, and Battles of Prince of Persia.

Other games also included what one Twitter user documenting the files called “weird bootleg babe” games.

To play these games, Bin Laden used legally available console emulation software as he didn’t own gaming consoles or handhelds.

The terrorist also downloaded multiple CGI movies including Antz, Cars, Chicken Little, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. He also took an interest in downloading shows about himself, and movies that lampooned him, like the 2008 comedy-documentary Where In The World is Osama bin Laden—all of which were illegally downloaded through Bit Torrent websites.

Bin Laden also appeared to be an avid watcher of Japanese cartoons, with Arabic-subtitled episodes of Detective Conan, and the Street Fighter 4 animated movie.

The CIA noted that some of the material they collected is not public, such as materials related to national security and malware found on his browser. However, CIA did also note the discovery of porn, which they did not make viewable to the public.
