Talking to The Hindu , post commissioning of the ship, Vice-Admiral Bisht said the Eastern Naval Command will add up two more Kamorta-class anti-submarine warfare corvettes by 2018, to its fleet of two.

But what will make ENC a dominant force in the eastern seaboard is the induction of another Shivalik class multi-role stealth frigate to its existing fleet of three. We already have INS Shivalik , Satpura and Sahyadri , and the new one which is being built by GRSE will have enhanced state-of-the-art features and will be inducted shortly,” he said.

This is a very surprising development if true. Considering that MDL built the Shivalik Class and lack of any official announcement of follow-on order, is it wrong reporting? Only front-line warship made by GRSE is Kamorta class and it is clearly not what he was talking about.

Anyone got any information on this?

Anyone , please go through the Google maps and give a look to GRSE. And do share if anyone gets any hint.

Because if it is being built , and it is to be delivered within few years, At least it must have been completed enough so that it can be launched. And such a big ship cannot be hidden.

Wouldn't this be the follow on Project 17A class??

Four of the frigates will be constructed by Mazagon Dock Ltd in Mumbai and three by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers in Kolkata. India’s Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved the proposal of Ministry of Defence (MoD) for starting the Project 17A design-cum-construction programme in September 2012.[8] The contract was signed with the two shipyards in February 2015. Construction is expected to commence in early 2017 after a preparatory period of 24 months and the first ship is expected to be commissioned by 2023.[10][11]

Fincantieri has signed a contract with Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) to provide technical advice within the Project 17A.[12]

On 11 March 2016, the defense ministry approved a ₹13,000 crore (US$1.9 billion) weapons and sensors package for the project. The frigates will be equipped with Barak 8(LR-SAM), BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, Ajanta electronic warfare system and Humsa-NG radar[13][14]

I think he is refering to The Project 17A-class frigate is a follow-on of the Project 17 Shivalik-class frigate for the Indian Navy. A total of seven ships will be built at Mazagon Dock and GRSE.
Four of the frigates will be constructed by Mazagon Dock Ltd in Mumbai and three by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers in Kolkata.

Maybe this is one of those concurrent builds.

I went through satellite feeds from few sources. Only 2 Kamorta and several LCU on different stages of construction. Even their yearly booklet contains no information of the said ship. Not sure what VA was talking about. I don't believe its regarding P-17A because not even the design is completed and atleast 4 P-17A ships are expected to join Eastern Command against his comment for a single ship.

"But what will make ENC a dominant force in the eastern seaboard is the induction of another Shivalik class multi-role stealth frigate to its existing fleet of three."

Very weird, very weird indeed. AFAIK no 4th P-17 was ever planned nor has the construction of such a vessel ever been announced.

For those claiming this is a reference to the P-17A, this can't be the case as the VA clearly states a 4th Shivlaik class vessel, the P-17As are NOT Shivlaik class vessels, they will have an entirely different class name (just like P-15A/B).

Hope this is true, the P-17 is a damn fine ship and it always struck me as a waste that only 3 were ever made (especially when 6, now 10, Talwar class were ordered). Not sure it is though.

As per the 2014 -2015 Reports for Mazagon Docks

A Total of 7 P17A is to be built - 4 By Mazagon - 3 by GRSE - This contract was signed on Feb 2015 and construction to start next year!

My guess is that the VA is been misquoted or the reporter simply combined quotes with another source and since the follow on P17A hasn't been named yet , simply just put the Shivalik name.
