Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said India has 2,987 fire stations against the requirement of 8,559, which shows a deficiency of 65 per cent.

Indian cities and rural areas are facing shortage of fire stations as little less than 3,000 such units are operating against the requirement of over 8,500, the Lok Sabha was informed today.

Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said India has 2,987 fire stations against the requirement of 8,559, which shows a deficiency of 65 per cent.

The Standing Fire Advisory Council, which has representatives from all states, has recommended setting up fire stations based on response time — five to seven minutes in urban areas and 20 minutes in rural areas.

He said the maintenance of fire service is a municipal function but the Centre pitches in with funds and training to improve the infrastructure and quality of manpower needed to tackle fire incidents.

The National Disaster Management Authority had issued guidelines in April, 2012 to standardise the type of equipment and training of personnel to modernise and improve fire fighting capabilities in the country, Rijiju said.

The National Fires Service College, Nagpur provides training to fire officers in advanced techniques of fire fighting and rescue, keeping in mind changes such as industrialisation, growth of industry and expansion of urban areas, he said in his written response.

The article is one year old,but the problem is probably still up to this day.
Why such a shortage and so few fire stations in a country like India ? Just to compare,France, which is way smaller and less populated than India has 6.894 fire stations.

Nothing but, its just there's a lot of basic work to be done in India.

We are still trying to educate the remaining 38% population of India to give up open defecation. [In last two years, progress has been significant , we have provided sanitation and toilets to more than 200 million Indians].

Similarly there are basic issues, like lack of electricity. Lack of LPG connections .

Unlike Rafale deal, the basics , which were ignored for 60+ years is being taken care very well at a decent pace.

Maybe 3-4 year down the line, we will be able to reduce the deficiency upto 40%. Because even in the present ~3000 stations, more than 50% will have obsolete equipment.

So quality and quantity, both are issues.

Corruption, power play. Politicians want to pay less, keep them overworked etc so their lives are in control of the politicians.

Similarly, most policemen in India don't get weekends off, they work 7 days a week, 365 days a year. They need to apply for leaves, which they may get or may not get. Plus, they work 12 hours a day. I guess it's the same with firemen.

This is why BJP has been getting momentum in elections. Not to mention, people even accepted demonetization because of the belief that it will fight corruption. Congress is extremely corrupt and people are waking up to that only now.

Is there mini fire engine ?

Because Indian town planning allows deviation with minimal fine..
Space for standard vehicle may not available most often ..

I was wondering whether mini vehicle available like fighters , and a refueler like tankers are in service ? ..?
