Old rivalry with fascinating sub-plots as India meet arch-rivals Pakistan

It's that time of the cricket season once again. The marquee match, the one rivalry that has claims to be the supreme one in world cricket. The one that's been held back by external forces, and now ready to burst from the seams as it promises to in every ICC tournament. The excitement surrounding the India-Pakistan game is unsurprisingly massive, thanks to the political drama and history between the two countries. It was once an equally fascinating cricketing rivalry.

For a long time now, these cricket contests have turned out to be an unfulfilling meal after the starters. This one at Edgbaston, Birmingham in the ICC Champions Trophy does not promise to be anything better, at least not so from the outset. Pakistan just about scraped through to make it the top eight, and are facing India, who at the other end are vying to be the best ODI team in the world. It was a tradition to call it a contest between India's batsmen and Pakistan's bowlers, that will not find weightage this time around.

India's pacers have repayed the faith shown in their promise over the years but Pakistan's have taken the opposite route. Wahab Riaz, Junaid Khan and Mohammad Amir have all not been able to somehow get into the bracket of the world's best pacers despite the obvious, overloaded talent. And in their batting, Pakistan have been trying to fit a square block in a round hole, invariably going for accumulation in the middle overs and creating a sepia tone in their style while the rest have shifted to varied blings. They've showed an intent to change it around, but the process remains in progress and doesn't seem to be near completion.

So then what does this contest hold for cricket-watchers? A few good things certainly. The Champions Trophy format is designed to be as close to sudden death as possible. When players from either side resort to playing it down with the phrase 'just another game', there is no escaping the fact that any game in the tournament is as important as a knockout. Just one loss could set a team back irrevocably, so the result is of obvious importance and carries its own edge. And there is more.

This is perhaps one time that India's off-field dramas have engulfed the team's build-up, and unlike other times, this drama isn't a political one related to BCCI management, but one within the team. As much as they'd like to not let it in the open, there is no telling how much of this drama has affected the team.

Their opposition, Pakistan would empathize with this situation, and perhaps could even offer a few tips on how best to handle such things. They will, for once, be happy to be on the other side of the fence.

The setting in Birmingham for the game, filled with expats from both countries, promises to be an interesting one, and a lot friendlier, given that people from both countries live together in harmony here but the excitement from that section is palpable. It's no different from the days leading up to any other India-Pakistan cricket match, with all the attached frills propping up once again. If the match itself turns out (weather permitting) to be one that tickles all palates, then it sets up the tournament beautifully.
