After exhaustive trials of six fighter jets, Indian Air Force (IAF) has made its choice clear to the Government on the kind of fighter jets needed. Frontrunners for the force are French fighter Dassault Rafale and the Eurofighter Typhoon built by the European consortium. Bernhard Gerwert, Chief, EADS, says “If you are taking into account the portfolio of EADS we can bring the bridge between civil aviation and military aviation.â€￾ But the Americans and Russians have lost out. Boeing’s F18 no longer a frontrunner and Sweden’s Gripen too falling off the Indian radar.

Despite MiG 35s big thunder, its engine failing to impress while the F-16, according to the IAF has no future. Another reason favouring Rafale and Eurofighter is political. Thomas Matussek, German Ambassador, “We regard India as a strategic security partner and this is why we do not insist on an end user monitoring agreement period.â€￾ So when the mother of all defence deals is signed for the 126 Multi-Role Combat Aircraft either Rafale or the Eurofighter will fly away with the Rs 42,000 crore deal.

When Boeing does a press release, they claim F-18 is the front runner.
When EADS does it, Typhoon is the leader.
Mig says, Mig-35 qualifies for everything.
Gripen says that others failed in Leh test.
French say, Rafale is India's foremost choice.

There is no indication which aircraft is doing best. All are assumptions and claims by marketing divisions of respective companies.

Nothing concrete. Only way is to wait.

EF and f18...might be the last two choices...and both might be taken...saying this because I am sure the US wont be sidelined easily by our ministers..they might go for additional birds if needed or may be less in number along with some other aircraft, but they will select it...so that makes f18 case very strong..and not to forget, its still one of the best.

The decision is not hard to make Rafale & EFT typhoon are the best of best in the contenders except Gripen all others are just an improvement on older airframes. Personally 200 EFT's on our side will become a game changer in Asia.

They still did not count out the SH. The decision on it is still delayed due to its engine. I've been saying that the SHs max speed and TWR are not impressive.

But yeah, between the Rafale and the Eurofighter, I would pick the Rafale.
    Reasons...
-AESA almost ready, to be put into production this year
    -less expensive than the EFT
-no need for new infrastructure (mirage 2000)
-proven A2G capability (used in A-stan)
    -good weapons payload
    -good range
-french avionics for JF17 ruled out.

Rafale is good and it has several diplomatic advantages, but in terms of warfare, it is not comparable to Typhoon.

Out of all the forces which evaluated the Rafale, none found it impressive enough. If you feel SH is slow, Rafale is just as slow and aluggish.

The radar of Rafale in incomparable to Typhoon's or SH's. Even for AESA, the details are very scarce. The only things that works in favor of Rafale is its ability to take on every role. It is one aircraft for all roles. And of course its SPECTRA is another winning point.

The rcs of Rafale is also rumored to be 3 times higher than SH and Typhoon. So we're all looking at the fourth tranche of Rafale. If it gets some improvements, then we might look at it. Right now the competition is very tight and better aircraft are available.

Agreed that the Rafale is as sluggish as the Super Hornet but it comes with no strings attached and full ToT. Not to mention, Snecma is working on an improved engine for the Rafale, the M88-3.

Also, unlike the EFT, the aesa development of the RBE2 is almost done and is set for induction in 2011 with serial production beginning this year. Assuming that, the IAF will get the AESA radar with the first few delivery aircraft.

About the RCS, I would be definitely happy if you could give me something that backs your claim.

The only reason why I don't support the SH is that it offers barely some ToT and fear of sanctions. A barking dog is better than a sleeping lion. Yeah, the USA signed a nuke deal with India but the fear will always remain.

Regarding the EFT, first of all its too expensive and other reason is it was built as an air superiority fighter. The IAF needs a bomb truck first and a fighter second. Not to mention, Italy and Germany are looking to cut their orders.

India plays down reports of MMRCA decision

    Non-Subscriber Extract

The official spokesman of the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has downplayed media reports that France's Dassault Rafale and the Eurofighter Typhoon have emerged as favourites to win India's Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) contest.

Speaking to Jane's on 10 August, Sitanshu Kar said no decisions have been made about the programme following the MoD's receipt of a comprehensive trial report on the six rival fighters competing for the INR420 billion (USD9.1 billion) contract.

Some media outlets in India had earlier reported that the results of the MMRCA technical evaluations, which concluded in mid-2010, had prompted the Indian Air Force (IAF) to recommend to the MoD that the shortlist be narrowed down to just two aircraft: the Rafale and Typhoon.

The other platforms competing for the 126-aircraft tender are Boeing's F/A-18E/F, Lockheed Martin's F-16IN, the Russian United Aircraft Corporation's MiG-35 and Saab's JAS 39 Gripen NG.
