Slightly disappointing for defense sector, CAPex should have been above 1 lakh crore. Lets just wait for April and actual data.

1.6% of GDP for defence will be the new normal under this GoI IMHO.

Given the threats we face...2 to 2.5% should be the norm. Even NATO states are advised to spend 2% just because they want to deal with the propped-up Russian boogeyman. We on the other hand have real threats.

The defence budget will increase as the economy grows, I am okay with 1.6% if the freed up funds are spent on value generation projects such as education/infrastructure/R&D as in the long term this will sustain the defence capabilties of India far more and will disproportionatly enhance India's strategic standing.

From 2025 India should fix its defence budget at 2.0% of GDP though, hopefully through law otherwise the civilians will keep diving into the defence budget as the military is the easiest target.

We have other priorities too brother....
The government has planned many things on the socio-economic front....
    It needs money.....

There is money for recapitalisation of PSU banks....There is increased spending on transport infrastructure....All this along with tax sops for small industries and low income families....

We also have proir commitment like MNREGA and similar socio-economic schemes which require annual capital input...

As our economy grows...1.5-1.6% of GDP will also grow...

Bazooka hits military’s hopes of modernisation
The defence budget was hiked by a measly 6% to Rs 274,114 crore ($40.42 billion), dashing hopes of any major jump in military modernisation this year despite heightened tensions with Pakistan and the ever-expanding military capabilities of China.

The defence outlay works out to 1.63% of the projected GDP for 2017-18, the lowest figure since the 1962 war with China. Though this figure has been steadily declining in percentage terms as the economy expands, military experts contend it should be over 2.5% to ensure the armed forces are capable of tackling the "collusive threat" from Pakistan and China.
