    Brahmos Supersonic Cruise Missiles

    Subsequent to the India joining Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), Russia and India have agreed to extend the range of Brahmos supersonic cruise missile beyond 300 km. The proposal for undertaking joint technical development work for extending range beyond 300 kms has been executed between India & Russia.

    This information was given by Minister of State for Defence Dr. Subhash Bhamre in a written reply to Shri R Parthipan and Shri B Senguttuvan in Lok Sabha today.

    Defence Shipyards

    Defence Shipyards have capability of manufacturing frontline warships like destroyers, frigates, corvettes including auxiliaries like fleet tankers, fast attacks crafts, landing craft utilities, mine counter measure vessels, offshore patrol vessels, etc. Cochin Shipyard Limited, under administrative control of Ministry of Shipping is building the Aircraft carrier for Indian Navy. Government has taken several initiatives to modernize these shipyards. The details of some of the initiatives are as under:-
    Mazagaon Dock Limited (MDL): MDL has successfully completed Mazdock Modernisation Program (MMP), which included creation of facilities like New Wet Basin, Module Workshop, heavy duty Goliath Crane, Cradle Assembly Shop etc. In addition new Submarine Assembly Workshop has been developed as a second line for Submarine in 2014-15 and 2015-16, Rs.75.80 Crore and Rs. 38.99 Crore respectively were allocated for this purpose. Rs. 9.84 crore has been spent upto 30.11.2016 in 2016-17.
    Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE): GRSE modernization project was completed in 2013 at a total cost of Rs. 606 Crore. The important facilities created under this modernization phase include Dry Dock (10000 Ton capacity), inclined Berth (4500 ton capacity), Module Hall, 250 Ton Goliath Crane, Electrical Substation, Paint Cell etc.
    Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL): GSL has undertaken infrastructure modernization programme at an outlay of around Rs. 1300 Crore. It has four phases. Phase 1, 2 & 3A have since been completed. Work for balance phases (phase 3B & 4) is in progress. Rs. 212 Crore was provided for the above modernization in 2014-15 and 2015-16.

    GENERAL BIPIN RAWAT takes over as the 27th COAS of the INDIAN ARMY

    General Dalbir Singh, the Chief of Army Staff, after an illustrious career spanning over four decades, handed over the baton to General Bipin Rawat in a ceremony held at South Block today. Amongst numerous achievements, the tenure of Gen Dalbir Singh was operationally significant wherein a high tempo of operations was maintained in J&K and North East. Gen Dalbir Singh laid a wreath at Amar Jawan Jyoti and was accorded a guard of honour at South Block Lawns prior to relinquishing as COAS.

    General Bipin Rawat took over as the 27th Chief of the Army Staff. The General Officer was tenanting the appointment of the Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS) of the Indian Army from 01 Sep 2016.

    General Bipin Rawat was commissioned in the Fifth Battalion of the Eleven Gorkha Rifles in December 1978, from Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, where he was awarded the ‘Sword of Honour’. The General Officer has vast experience in high altitude warfare and counter insurgency operations. He commanded an Infantry battalion, along the Line of Actual Control in the Eastern Sector; a Rashtriya Rifles Sector and an Infantry Division in the Kashmir Valley, a Corps in the Eastern theatre and the Southern Command. He has tenanted instructional appointments at Indian Military Academy, Dehradun and at Army War College, Mhow.

    Lt Gen Bipin Rawat has held important staff appointments at Directorate General of Military Operations and Military Secretary’s Branch at Army HQ. He has also been Major General General Staff (MGGS) at HQ Eastern Command. The General Officer commanded a Multinational Brigade, in a Chapter VII mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC). Whilst serving with the United Nations, he was twice awarded the Force Commander’s Commendation.

    An alumni of Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, the Higher Command & National Defence College Courses, the General Officer, during the span of over 38 years service in uniform, has been awarded for gallantry and distinguished service with the UYSM, AVSM, YSM, SM, VSM, COAS Commendation on two occasions and the Army Commander’s Commendation. The General Officer also attended the Command and General Staff College (CGSC) course at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, USA.

    Academically inclined, he has authored numerous articles on ‘National Security’ and ‘Leadership’, which have been published in various journals and publications. He was awarded M. Phil in Defence Studies from Madras University. He has a Diploma in Management and another Diploma in Computer Studies. Lieutenant General Bipin Rawat has also completed his research on military media strategic studies and was awarded Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D) from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut in 2011.

    Vacant Posts of Scientists In DRDO

    There is no vacancy of scientists in DRDO as on date. However, DRDO regularly recruits scientists for the posts which fall vacant due to superannuation/voluntary retirement.

    Regular recruitments through Advertisements, Campus Recruitments from Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc) & National Institutes of Technology (NITs); and Lateral Entry, etc. are carried out as per the requirements to fill the existing vacancies.

    The Missile Assisted Torpedo seems an Indian Assembled Anti Submarine Klub Missile Variant.

    Power Banks for Armed Forces

    All official mobile phones and communications equipment of the Armed Forces operating over difficult terrain come with their integral Power Banks and Generators. No difficulty in their charging has been faced or reported. Even facility of charging personal mobile phones is being provided under unit / sub unit arrangements and no such issue of lack of charging facility has come to light.

    All Power Banks, Batteries, Generator and Charging Sets are suitably ruggedized as per the stipulated Military Standards to ensure their operatability in all weather conditions and rigours of terrain.

    India and Vietnam share a strategic partnership. Defence cooperation, including supply of defence equipment, is an important aspect of this partnership. Both countries have held discussions on range of issues in this regard.

    Joint Military Exercise between India and Maldives

    India and Maldives conduct joint military exercise named ‘Exercise EKUVERIN’ alternatively in India and Maldives with participation of an Infantry platoon from each side. The latest exercise was conducted in Maldives in December 2016. The objectives of the exercise are to enhance defence cooperation and interoperability between the army of both countries with emphasis on Counter Insurgency and Counter Terrorist operations under UN mandate.

    Indigenous Technologies Developed by DRDO

    Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has been developing technologies, products and systems that are required for the Armed Forces. After the systems are trial evaluated and accepted by the Users, the technologies are transferred to production agencies for manufacture and supply to Users. Indigenous technologies developed by DRDO are available for transfer to Indian Industry. The process for transfer of indigenous technologies has been promulgated and a document tilted “DRDO Guidelines for Transfer of Technology” has already been issued.

    Based on technologies developed by DRDO, major systems/ products inducted or approved by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) during 2016 for induction into Services are given below:

    • Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas

    • Long Range Surface to Air Missile (LR-SAM)

    • Surface to Surface Missile System

    • Electronic Warfare System Shakti

    • Hull Mounted Sonar- New Generation

    • Varunastra Torpedo

    • Commander’s Thermal Imaging Sight for T-90

    • NBC Protection System for BMP 2/2K

    • Low Level Light Weight Radar Mk-II

    • Multi Mission Maritime Aircraft

    • Akash Weapon System

    • 7 Ton Heavy Drop System

    • Electro-Optical Fire Control System for Naval Ships

    • Mareech- Anti Torpedo Decoy System

    • Abhay Sonar

    • Near Field Acoustic Characterization System (NACS)

    • Advanced Indigenous Distress Sonar System (AIDSS) for Submarines.

    Pinaka Rocket

    Trails of guided Pinaka Rocket were successfully conducted at Integrated Test Range (ITR) Balasore in two phases on 12th and 24th Jan 2017 with range of 65 km and 75 km, respectively. The guided version of Pinaka Rocket incorporates Inertial Navigation Systems (INS)/ Global Positioning System (GPS) for the mid-course guidance with accuracy of 60m to 80m at all ranges. In the recent trials conducted, the desired accuracy has been achieved.

    Pinaka has been design and developed for induction into Army after successful User Trials. Two Regiments of Pinaka Unguided Version have already been inducted in Army. Current trials have been conducted for demonstrating the feasibility of the development of Guided Version of Pinaka Rocket using the same Launcher and Ammunition Configuration.
