NEW DELHI: A policeman who was injured in clashes during a protest over a gang-rape in New Delhi died on Tuesday, a police spokesman said.

The 47-year-old police constable, Subash Tomar, was deployed at the India Gate monument on Sunday to control the protests. He was beaten up by a mob and rushed to hospital by the police.

"The protesters pelted stones at Tomar, he was unconscious for two days and today he died," New Delhi police spokesman Rajan Bhagat told media.

More than 50 policemen were injured in Sunday's violence as police struggled to quell increasing outrage over sex crimes following the gang-rape of a student.

Tomar's cousin Ajay who was in the hospital to claim the body said he had joined the police in 1985 and never spent a single festival with the family.

"My cousin was always out on streets maintaining law and order. The mob attacked him for no reason. They just killed him," said Ajay Tomar.

Much of central Delhi remains sealed off after the wave of violent protests over the gang-rape of a 23-year-old student in the capital and a surge in violence against women.

Protests have taken place across India over the last week to denounce the police and government.

National figures show that 228,650 of the total 256,329 violent crimes recorded last year were against women, with the number of rapes in the capital rising 17 percent to 661 this year.

The biggest protests were in New Delhi on the weekend, prompting police to cordon off areas around government buildings. More than 100 people were injured including dozens of policemen.

The clampdown was tightened Monday, with commuters having to make lengthy detours to get to work.

Recall mid night police crack down on Ramdev and his followers. A woman died as result of injuries. Police called it collateral damage. Death of the constable too is exactly that.

Yeah...well part of the problem is that the police didn't baton ramdev hard enough. Why don't you go on beats and put up with $hit like they do everyday? Do you even have the energy to do that old man? Being critical of the police is one thing, disrespecting a man man who laid down his life in the line of duty is something else.

What sort of disrespect when he says collateral damage? Yeh Delhi Police ke gaand pe dande hi padne chahiye.

If the Delhi Police are maintaining law and order this should not have happend in the first place.

Sorry for being personal but teri bahen ko choda hota to aise bolta kya? Put yourself in the shoes of the people... they are only asking for the police to do their job. Instead of apprehending the criminals, they are lathi charging the peaceful protestors.

    Apologies once again...

Your argument is a double edged sword. If your father was killed by the mob (like this policeman was), would you still be as supportive of their actions?

    Shame On कांग्रेस

in India everybody is a critic, everybody is ready to blame it on police or govt, if something bad happens. even in our movies its always shown that, police arrives only after everything has happened, but before blaming everything on the police let me ask u this, would u like to live in a country where there is no police? how do u imagine that state will b? better or worse? the rape for which u r so eager to blame the police, if there was no police the no. of such incidents would decrease or increase? will u b happier when ur sister or ur wife or ur mother returns to home at night knowing that there is no police? if u r happier with the consequences of absence of police, then u hav the rights to bash them, but r u really that crazier?

If I knew that this was a peaceful mob, and they are doing it for the right reasons, then yes.

It's like my close friend is a Major and when he has signed up for the Army, we know he is going to go in harm's way. But he is defending the nation.

If he would be part of a cop team that is lathi charging peaceful demonstrators that are demanding rightful justice, then so be it.

BTW; I have lost quite a few people I knew during the Mumbai attacks. These security agencies are so ready to be at the call and behest of the babus but when it comes to defending our borders, they are found wanting. Now these cops especially in a city like Delhi are nothing that represent the ideals for which they are originally hired to defend. How come a lady can't walk in Gurgaon safely after dusk? How come a lady traveling in a bus gets gang raped? This is not an isolated incident but a culmination of a number of them over the years. It's like the Aam aadmi party... eventually if nothing works, it will come to violence.

Would I live in a country without police? Well let's be precise... I think what you meant is would you live in a country without a security apparatus that is meant to PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF THE PEOPLE? The answer is no. Unfortunately, I personally have a lack of faith in the ability / willingness of these "police" guys to protect aam junta. How come an incident like this happens in the CAPITAL city? Woh ******* Manmohan aake thik hai bolta hai... how dare he. Par see... we can only **********... what else can you do? I will vote next election for sure and I hope to God we don't get another version of MMS.... ******* gaddar.

respect to the police man who died ...rip

remember guys this police were protecting the politicians .if they had shown the same dedication to protect the people of the city these protest would never take place ......

i feel sry for the police man who died .but u cannot blame the protesters for it ..unless some1 in the protesters were really trying to kill the police ........

well, precisely what i meant was if the people would like to live in a state of chaos, a state of lawlessness, a state of fear? wearing che guevara t-shirt and shouting off weak slogans in which neither u nor ur friends believe in would only lead to that.its time to smarten up.

    RIP to the policeman.

But reality may have been different.
