Chennai, Sep 18: A 21-year-old youngster from Chennai has written her name in a fresh page of Indian histrory by becoming the first woman to be conferred by the Army with the coveted 'Sword of Honour'.

The 'Sword of Honour' awared to the best all-round cadet annually at the passing out parade after 49 weeks of gruelling training has been bagged by men year after year.

This tiring trend was changed by Divya Ajith Kumar, who on Saturday, Sep 18 received the Sword of Honour on at the Officers' Training Academy (OTA) in her home town.

The BCom graduate from Chennai beat nearly 230 other cadets, including 70 female peers to pocket the highest award given to a cadet of the OTA.

"She has come out on top in the overall merit list. She has outsmarted all others," OTA spokesman Major R K Choudhary told BBC.

Speaking to the media on her achievement, Divya said that she had always planned to become a civil servant.

"My choice was to join any kind of service. It would have civil services, if not the Army, my parents knew I would take up, something in the uniform," Divya is quoted as saying in media reports.

Divya's feat comes as a huge boost to women in Indian defence system, where they still struggle to be treated equally.

Chennai girl becomes first woman to be awarded 'Sword of Honour'

Chennai: For the first time in the history of the Officers Training Academy, one of the country's premier defence training institutes, a woman cadet would be decorated with its highest award "Sword of Honour".

A Divya (21) would receive the honor, given to the best all-round cadet, from Chief of Army Staff Gen V K Singh on September 18 during this year's Passing Out Parade at the OTA here. She also bagged three Gold Medals in academics. She would be among the 70 woman cadets and 157 gentleman cadets to be commissioned into the Army after the Passing Out Parade to be reviewed by Gen V K Singh.

Since 1992 when OTA started training women after the Army opening its portals for their entry as Commissioned Officers, this was the first time a woman cadet has bagged the 'Sword of Honour'. In this batch, 15 gentlemen cadets of Afghanistan and two woman cadets from Lesotho, a landlocked Constitutional monarchy in Southern Africa, also underwent training at the OTA.

Divya's father Ajith Kumar said he was very proud of her achievement while her mother Dinah Ajith Kumar said, "Getting this Sword of Honour not only shows her dedication but also her mental strength." Divya a multi-faceted personality is an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer, percussionist and well versed in sports like basketball, discus throw and many other outdoor games.
