Eh, Middle Eastern purchases rarely follow military logic, they're political favours first and military purchases 2nd, which makes them not credible when talking about competitions.

We'll see, I don't really see the money for massive typhoon upgrades since UK and Italy are moving on with the F-35.

All fighter tenders (except MMRCA maybe) include political advantages, that doesn't deny the fact that there were competitions in those countries and that the EF won. Rafale orders of Qatar and Egypt were not even tenders, so orders/exports counts.

Rafale operating cost is already 2/3 of F-16 one, so why not?

They are doing it by improving quality of the parts and reducing maintenance work.

The Russians did the same for new Flankers and Fulcrums.

    @sunstersun

This shows the difference of the EF P1E even today:

    https://www.eurofighter.com/news-and-events/2017/08/typhoon-proves-itself-in-fight-against-daesh

With Paveway IV and the GBU 16 that was already available in Libya, the CAS game changed for the EF. Within the next 2 years, Brimstone and Spear will be added, just as the latest Litening / Recce Lite versions and you have a very capable CAS and recon fighter.
While the downside remains the design flaw of the centerline station to use heavy weapons.

You will not find an article saying that a flying hour of F-16 cost less than $ 16000 for exemple this aticle say $ 22514
    http://nation.time.com/2013/04/02/costly-flight-hours/
and there is official report saying that a Rafale flying hour cost less than $ 10 000 even during real operation. And our DGA said to the SENAT that the size of the team needed to perform the Rafale maintenance during exercises is frequently half of the size needed for other aircrafts, and he used this argument to convince the SENAT people that India will buy much more Rafale than 36.

When you buy a car in France and the same one in the US, it doesn't mean you pay the same price, because in each country the costs includes different taxes.
Similarly, there is no meaning in comparing French Senat figures with once in other countries, because they don't include the same content.
The only reliable figures for cost per hour of a fighter, will come from customers, that operates Rafale and F16, or from tenders that evaluated both fighters under the same conditions.

I wish the typhoon the best of luck.

    couple of decisive advantages tho.

    1) Netherlands has already chosen the F-35. They cooperate on air defence. IE spares and logistics.

    2) Belgium was originally part of the starting 4 European nations that joined the F-16 program. It is surprising that they didn't sign up as a tiered partner.

    3) Most manufacturing for the Typhoons is already done. The F-35 hasn't even started peak production yet. 2% of the F-35 program is way more than 100% production of the 34 typhoons which wouldn't happen anyways.

It is interesting that 3/4 of the main competitors for the program have dropped out.

I expect the competition to be more of a coronation ceremony than a legit competition.

I don't know what the Typhoon is doing in the competition. If they withdraw, perhaps Belgium will setup a more fair competition.

If they withdraw it saves Belgium a lot of time.
