MOSCOW: A car bomber struck at a central market in the Russian Caucasian city of Vladikavkaz, killing at least 12 people and wounding 80 others in the North Ossetian region.

The bombing was committed by a suicide bomber driving a Volga car which exploded at the entrance of the market, Interfax news agency quoted the government of North Ossetia as saying.

The Interior Ministry of North Ossetia said at least 12 people were killed and as many as 80 were injured in the bombing.

Police sealed off the area and all the city emergency services rushed to the scene, as North Ossetia leader Taimuraz Mamsurov arrived at the market.

The powerful blast shattered windows in nearby houses. Interfax said the blast was caused by explosives weighing 10 kilogrammes. The explosion caused panic all around the market.

North Ossetia lies in Russia's troubled Northern Caucasus region, north of South Ossetia, the Georgian breakaway region over which Russia and Georgia fought a war in August 2008.

Russia has been on a state of high alert after the twin bombings in Moscow Metro killed 40 people.
