Nope, it was not possible to fix a deal with Dassault, that was complying to the tender rules. That's why the only way around it, was the bad G2G deal.

Or simply because limiting the tender to SE's cuts down the list of fighters to evaluate to just 2 candidates, which fast tracks the procedure.
With the 8 billion we spent on the Rafales and the costs for this tender, we could have bought 126 Rafale too, so money was available and certainly not the issue.

We are not looking for a light fighter, because the SE's are medium class fighters.

    Gripen E - 8t empty
    F16 B70 - 9.2t
    Rafale - 9.5t

Why don't we develop a new single engine fighter jet based on a proven platform like Hawks....

India is being robbed of its money thru these deals. We will be left even weeker after acquiring these fancy aircraft.

Hawk is only a trainer aircraft and don't let yourself confuse with the nonsense about Single and Twin engine fighters. IAF is not dividing fighters like that, but in light, medium and heavy class fighters. The light and heavy sides are covered with LCA and MKI and now we try to fill the medium class with Rafale + another medium type.

We had St Anthony for 8 years of UPA. He did his best to be squeaky clean.

Now we have BJP which we know won't get into such useless corruption. The govt will never do anything that will hurt the country. As I've always said, if the F-16 wins, it will be on its own merits and not because the govt favoured it.

India is not getting robbed off anything.

Out of an expected 850 fighter air force, we are guaranteed only 270 new platforms, and even the oldest ones out of those 270 are almost 20 years old, all other jets are already pushing 30 years. We need 300-350 jets on contract over the next 5 years or we are screwed. LCA, SE MII and TE MII will get us those numbers. By the time we get some significant numbers of these new jets, even our oldest MKIs will be nearing 30 years.

Source Based News on SE Fighter Procurement
    • As explained in the Rafale thread, IAF and MOD has come to a mutual understanding. Link - (http://indiandefence.com/threads/rafale-deal-signed.56201/page-434#post-593672)
    • The next round of MII meeting is scheduled in month end of September (tentatively 30th)
    • Might get changed by few days due to possibility of DM NS and EAM SS going to Washington.
    • Post Trump Modi handshake meeting talks, there are few representatives from USA side who also participate in meeting briefing finer blue print of SE fighter choice.
    • USA government has finally given support to both F16 and Gripen but has put a rider that there first choice to "support Indian security needs " is via LM proposal for F16/F35.
    • USA has further sweetened the deal during handshake meeting with a a G2G procurement scope for the F35 along with the F16 deal. This was confirmed by the US representative in the meetings as well with MOD.
    • Those F35s will be deviated out from present US scheduled production numbers on priority handover to IAF when ordered subject to full commitment and ordering of F16s.
    • Post 30th September next 2 weeks will see whirlwind activity with focus on building the consensus for G2G terms for LM order and F16s procurement.
    • If the consensus works out as per MOD plan, then by October end some forward announcement is expected.
    • If this fails then the other options will be explored including Gripen E, Mig35 with Indian customizations etc.
    • Focus is now firmly on a G2G deal for SE procurement instead of the tender path and hence multiple round of meetings scheduled in coming days for the same. (as disclosed before in the merry go round thread - as one of the option getting explored)

    A non-tender route is a bad idea.
