    There is no price discovery.

A tender route brings in competition, quality checks etc. A non-tender route has nothing of the sort, especially with the US.

FMS is very special. The deal will be between the USG and GoI. GoI will ask for jets, USG will transfer the request to LM. LM will then quote a price and GoI must accept. There's no negotiations. Whatever price LM quotes is the final price. GoI can then only accept or reject. The profit margin on FMS deals is very large.

That's why a C-17 for India costs about 30-40% more than it costs for the USAF.

Yeah, there is little chance for Gripen if the MoD has already decided to purchase the F-16.

But I don't think that's gonna happen. We will see a tender and it's gonna end really fast.

So in that case you can modify like this:
There isn't a universe where the Gripen wins.

If they go for a non tender for a big contract just before LS elections, they are asking for some serious trouble.

    Gripen turns aggressor!

Saab has unveiled a new Gripen concept at the ongoing DSEI 17 in London. The Gripen Aggressor, is based on the Gripen C airframe, with a Gripen D-based two-seater an option. The Aggressor proposal is optimised for its mission and would not have live weapons capability.

Instead, it would have a simulation-based capability to fire air-to-air missiles, and its gun. The aircraft would also gain Saab's PS-05 Mk IV radar and an air combat manoeuvring instrumentation pod, while retaining its intra-Gripen fighter link and Link 16 functionality.

The program is aimed at getting rid of ‘‘negative-value’’ air combat training, in which modern aircraft fight against either the same type of aircraft, or against older and less-capable types. By offering dissimilar-type training against modern aircraft, it gives maximum training value, allowing pilots to ‘‘train as they fight’’.

The Gripen Aggressor proposal is being aimed at providing a high-end ‘Red Air’ adversary aircraft and proposed as a solution for the UK's air support to defence operational training (ASDOT) requirement, and part of the US Air Force's adversary air (ADAIR) opportunity.

This part deserves a dedicated post, since this is a big deal if available for India as well!

I pointed out before, that the SEAD capability of Gripen E, with it's advanced EWS, as well as the weapons Sweden and Brazil integrate (MAR 1 anti radiation missile, SDB PGM, SPICE 250 / 1000 PGMs), can be a prime advantage for India.
With the addition of dedicated escort jamming pods however, it turns from an F16CJ replacement, to a fully fledged Growler alternative!

Exactly. Especially considering it's FMS. The Left will have a field day saying Modi sold India to the US.

    I find it unrealistic anyway.

This deal if happens without tender will prove to be "Bofors" for BJP and will lead to BJP's downfall in 2019 and taint Modi.....

We don't have to worry about this. The Russians and Israelis have already developed some kickass stuff.

Then India deserves whatever Congress or Congress 2.0 it elects. This isn't being done to line Modi's pockets, it's part of the give-and-take involved with geopolitics and alliances in the 21st century.

At this point, even F-16's alone would be more than enough to handle Pakistan (their best frontline fighters are ~ 50-70 outdated F-16's which don't even compare to the ones we would get as our "low end fighters"); plus India would have the US and F-35 on its side to start boxing in China with other Asian US allies (Australia too).

And this is without mentioning, that such a deal would open up the gates for sophisticated technology (Armed drones, the F-35 as mentioned earlier etc etc).
