Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said in the LS :

    FOC of LCA (Navy) MK-II --> 2023
FOC for Air Force MK-II --> December 2025.

    http://www.ptinews.com/news/8584479_Armed-forces-lost-48-aircraft--21-choppers-since-2011.html

Both are still officially on-track despite IAF, IN rejecting them. Good job if the govt. can persuade them to change their minds. Need to built confidence in the armed forces for Indian aircraft if AMCA is to succeed.

So, if Gripen is indeed selected this year (not even considering F-16), and negotiation are completed by another year or so, say by Dec 2018, it'll take another 3-4 years to set up the assembly line and for the first Gripen to roll out, which is by 2022. (IMHO, the whole SE-MRCA debacle is hogwash, to buy time for the LCA)

If HAL/ADA can expedite the timeline for Tejas Mk-II by an year or so, its well worth the wait. Most of the kinks can be worked out between the FOC of N-LCA Mk-II (2023) and Tejas Mk-II FOC (2025).
Also remember the production rate for Gripen line is going to be on the low side in 2022 and full rate can only be achieved by another 3 years, ie 2025; while Tejas Mk-II can roll out @ 16a/c per year right off the bat in 2025. Not too shabby isn't it!

    Buzz in the air suggests
    • Saab Gripen E's 2 engine design for IAF is dead
    • it was a non starter from the beginning
    • IAF was called as an observer for Gripen M twin engine concept for IN RFI
    • Even that was rejected by IN as they dont want any concept planes.
    • No more any meetings are planned or scheduled about this concept

Don't think Trump is a psychopath, more likely “textbook” narcissist “a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others.” This puts Trump in the same category as a number of infamous dictators like Muammar Gaddafi, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Saddam Hussein

I agree, except of the Syrian strike, because there was a chemical attack, which required a reaction of any side.
But on topic again, he will surely try to make business with us, because he needs the Indian market, let's see what he offers and let's hope, that the PM don't get another bad deal for PR purposes.

Bulgaria May Get Saab Jets in Its Biggest Defense Deal in Decades

by Slav Okov and Elizabeth Konstantinova
    Wed Apr 26 2017 17:54:59 GMT+0530 (IST)

Bulgaria said it favors Saab AB fighter jets to replace its outdated Soviet-era aircraft in the nation’s biggest defense deal since the end of the Cold war.

The Black Sea country’s interim government approved the results of a tender to purchase at least eight Gripen jets for as much as 1.5 billion lev ($835 million), ranking Sweden’s offer first, Defense Minister Stefan Yanev told reporters Wednesday in Sofia. Bids from Portugal for used F-16s and from Italy for Eurofighter Typhoon planes were ranked second and third. Further negotiations will be held by the new government that takes office next month, Yanev said.

“A working group involving representatives of several institutions has been set up, which will hold negotiations with the first-ranked bidder,” interim Prime Minister Ognyan Gerdzhikov said, declining to elaborate.

The former eastern bloc nation of 7 million people is revamping its military amid calls from U.S. President Donald Trump for NATO members to meet the alliance’s spending guidelines. The European Union’s poorest country is worried about increasing threats from Islamic State and has raised concerns about potential calls for autonomy among ethnic Turks. Russia’s takeover of Crimea and the Ukraine conflict have rattled the whole region.

Bulgaria plans to increase its defense expenditure to 2 percent of economic output by 2024, from 1.5 percent this year and 1.4 percent in 2016. The Saab jets, planned for delivery in 18 months, would replace Russian MiG-29 fighters currently being used by the air force. The deal needs parliamentary approval and may face additional scrutiny from the new government that’s set to take office next month.

Lawmakers last year approved an 800 million-lev plan that also includes the purchase of two warships. The government held talks with eight shipbuilding companies, including France’s DCNS SA and Netherlands-based Damen Shipyards Group NV. It also plans to spend 1.5 billion lev on armed vehicles.

Need more information and discussion on LCA mk2. While I admire the over all capability of Gripen I am in favour of LCA mk2.

I believe unless safranised Kaveri is successful we may not be self sufficient in building fully indigenous fighter of our own.

Gripen E will have advantages in all areas to MK2 from what we know so far.
It can carry more weapons, more heavy weapons, most likely will have the more capable weapon pack. The IRST and EW it gets now, puts it perfectly in between Rafale and EF in terms of capability in these areas.
And if it comes with 1000 GaN modules on a repositioner, it could have very good detection capability as well.

However, the MK2 upgrade is not aimed to make LCA comparable to Gripen E, but to finally fix all it's problems. If that can be achieved, it will be a huge success for the program and the fighter.

A good way to see the differences between the fighters, are possible load configs. If we take ADA's configs for LCA in interdiction and air defence for example ( http://indiandefence.com/threads/lca-tejas-multirole-aircraft.93/page-560#post-554025 )

    Interdiction

    LCA - 1 x LDP, 2 fuel tanks, 2 x 1000lb LGB, 2 × SR missiles, no BVR missiles

    Gripen E - 1 x LDP, 2 fuel tanks, 2 x 1000lb LGB, 2 × SR missiles, up to 3 x BVR missiles

    F16 - 1 x LDP, 2 fuel tanks, 2 x 1000lb LGB, 2 × SR missiles, up to 4 x BVR missiles

    Rafale - 1 x LDP, 2 fuel tanks, 2 x 1000lb LGB, 2 × SR missiles, up to 4 x BVR missiles

    EF - 1 x LDP, 2 fuel tanks, 2 x 1000lb LGB, 2 × SR missiles, up to 6 x BVR missiles

    Air defence

    LCA - 2 fuel tanks, 2 x BVR missiles, 2 × SR missiles

    F16 - 2 fuel tanks, up to 4 x BVR missiles, 2 × SR missiles

    Gripen E - 2 fuel tanks, up to 5 x BVR missiles, 2 × SR missiles

Rafale - 2 fuel tanks, up to 6 x BVR missiles, 2 × SR missiles

EF - 2 fuel tanks, up to 8 x BVR missiles, 2 × SR missiles

LCA MK1A and MK2 will provide it with similar technologies as MMRCAs, but even if the overall payload will be increased, it won't have enough weaponstations to offer comparable loads.

Agreed but if fielded in numbers can compensate for load carrying capability. It's meant as an air defence fighter. Like two lca mk2 for one F16. If it's against JF17 one is enough. They will any way have support of Su30mki for air dominance.
