FIFA President writes to PM Modi praising his govt for its role in successfully hosting the FIFA U-17 World Cup

The recently concluded Under-17 World Cup hosted by India has been a record breaker.

The tournament which was won by England, not only saw the highest number of spectator attendance in the tournament’s history (13,47,143), it also saw the highest number of goals scored per match (3.40) ever since the tournament format was changed in 2007 to increase it to a 24 team affair from the earlier 16.

Even before the tournament had even concluded, we had reported how India had received high praise from FIFA for successfully hosting the world cup.

As mentioned in the report, Jaime Yarza the FIFA Head of Competitions has stated that the infrastructure provided was world class and the teams were happy with the organisation. India was also praised by FIFA president Giani Infantino, who declared that “India is a football country now”.

Now the FIFA president has made another warm gesture by sending a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which contained his thoughts about the tournament. This letter was shared on Twitter by Sports Journalist Samrat Chakraborty:

In the letter, Infantino stated that the whole FIFA delegation during the course of the tournament had made some unforgettable memories and had also made various warm-hearted friends during their stay at Kolkata and during the FIFA’s council meeting.

The President then congratulated the Modi government, for its role in successfully hosting the World Cup. He also expressed gratitude towards the AIFF, local organising committee and everyone else for their contribution in this tournament which was held across 6 venues.

He also apologised for not being able to attend the opening ceremony and thereby being unable to meet PM Modi in person. He concluded the letter by assuring that FIFA and the international football community would provide any assistance towards developing football in the country.

Before its start, I had reported how this tournament was a golden chance for India to shine on the global level. Going by the warm praise by FIFA, it can be concluded with certainty that India has been successful in making its mark.

Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) president Giovanni Vincenzo Infantino has congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for successfully hosting the 2017 FIFA Under-17 World Cup in the country.

In his letter to Prime Minister Modi, Infantino wrote, "The FIFA delegation has now returned to Zurich with a host of unforgettable memories and having made many warm-hearted new friendships during our stay in Kolkata for the final matches of the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 and the FIFA Council Meeting."

"Herewith, would like to congratulate your government on its role in your county's successful hosting of the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017"

"Express my gratitude towards the Local Organising Committee, to your government, and to all those who worked so hard to organise this competition in the host cities of New Dehli, Navi Mumbai, Goa, Kochi, Guwahati, and Kolkata. They all contributed immensely to a wonderful and memorable event," the letter added.

Infantino, who failed to meet Prime Minister Modi in person in New Delhi, due to other prior commitments, said that he hopes he would have the opportunity to meet him in future to exchange ideas about the approaches to developing football in India.

The FIFA president further applauded the efforts made by India's apex football body, All India Football Federation(AIFA), to promote football in the country with the 'Mission 11 Million' project and the setting up of the AIFF National Centre of Excellence in Kolkata.

"Herewith, I also would like to praise the remarkable work and efforts of the All India Football Federation to implement new plans for the development of our sport in your country,"

"such as the Mission 11 Million and the construction of the AIFF National Centre of Excellence in Kolkata, would like to reiterate my thanks for your contribution towards supporting football development and promoting the values of our sport in your country," the letter from Infantino said.

He further insisted that the FIFA is determined to provide any assistance in the realisation of these development projects and in the further promotion of the sport in India.

The FIFA U-17 World Cup, the first FIFA event hosted by India, ended with England crushing Spain 5-2 to lift the title at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium.

Its not just for the love of the game, its just the money involved as they are trying to create a new market. The Indian population is 2.5 times the population as in South american continent who are football crazy.
