Russia offers support to Pakistan after Heart of Asia conference

AMRITSAR: Russian special envoy to Afghanistan Mr. Zamir Kabulov extended support to Pakistan at the concluded Heart of Asia conference in the Indian city of Amritsar.

Mr. Kabulov, while addressing the conference, said that the speech by Pakistan’s Advisor to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz was friendly and constructive.

The Russian envoy said that Afghanistan is the pivot of the Heart of Asia conference and the agenda of the conference has not been hijacked. He said that all major players must extend long-term support to Afghanistan.

He said that being friends and supporters we should avoid the blame game and work together, and that bilateral relations should not cloud forums like the Heart of Asia.

“I don’t think the Heart of Asia is the right place for settling scores,” said Kabulov while speaking to the media after the session.

He also downplayed recent Russian military exercises with Pakistan, saying that no one has the right to complain when Russia does not complain about Indian relations with the US.

Pakistan received scathing criticism at the conference from the Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani who alleged that Pakistan was providing sanctuary to terrorists.

Ghani also stepped bilateral relations with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India announced $1 billion aid to Afghanistan and to establish an air corridor between the two countries.

The Heart of Asia – Istanbul Process was established in 2011 to provide a platform to discuss regional issues, and increase security, political, and economic cooperation among Afghanistan and its neighbours.

In International relation and politics no one is an enemy forever. I do not follow the title of this thread and i do not find any thing wrong in the Russian envoy statement viv a vis Russia India relation. It is the desi media yellow journo who farfetch every small issue. Russia India business proposition and friendship is something that pakistan and desi media watching ***** news channels can never understand. Pakistan is was an will be an scapegoat used by everyone. Chin used it and has been sucessful uptillnow now Russia is also trying to milk ***** mullas and that's why some times they do this lady gaga romance.

True. No one is enemy forever at the same time no one is friend forever too.

Let's not blame media for Russo-India relations going south. On the contrary in this case media, the media which is close to PM is highlighting and seem to be ecstatic that the divorce is taking place.

Suhasini Haidar ‏is Subramanyam Swamy's daughter and worked for CNN-IBN which are part of Network 18 which owned by Ambanis who are close to PM.

This is quite natural, the old relationship was pretty much based off arms purchases, and large amount of leftist/communist ideology. Commies are pretty much dead, and with big push for Make in India in addition to the U.S (and other western countries) being open to sell to India, pretty much narrows the scope for future arms purchases from Russia. Russia is also becoming increasingly dependent on China for many things, quite inevitable that hey will get sucked into supporting higher than Himalayas friend, and toeing their line on things. I dont understand why people start self flagellating on such things, relationships are based on interests.

And what do you expect of an Indian PM? grovel like a mangy dog in front of Russians!

You have this compulsion to blame all deterioration of Indo-Russian relations on India in a passive aggressive way, while completely ignoring that Russia had firmly moved into Chinese camp ,a long time ago, and would never had as good relations with India as it had in aftermath of Russo-Sino split. This (and last Manmohan singh's too) government is doing right thing by diversifying and not yielding to "OR else" threats of Russophile lobby.

Ties with Pakistan not at India’s cost: Vladimir Putin's envoy to Kabul

Russia is not strengthening ties with Pakistan at India’s cost and it has explained its position to India at the highest level, senior Russian diplomat and President Vladimir Putin’s envoy to Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov said on Sunday.

“Russia has a different history with Pakistan. We are trying to explore cooperation with Pakistan primarily to counter terror. But Russia’s ties with Pakistan will not be at the cost of our special and privileged strategic partnership with India. This has been explained by our highest leadership to India’s topmost leadership,” Kabulov told ET on the sidelines of the Heart of Asia meet in Amritsar.

Kabulov was leading the Russian delegation at the Heart of Asia meet, where Russia is one of the 14 stakeholders. He was answering a question on Russia’s emerging ties with Pakistan and recent reports of Pakistan’s “secret talks” with Russia on the use of Gwadar Port and joining China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which were denied by Russia’s foreign ministry. “I myself drafted that rebuff. I am also in charge of South Asia desk in the Russian foreign ministry and I am not aware of it. I do not know from where the suggestion to use either Gwadar or CPEC emerged. There is no such proposal,” Kabulov said.

Kabulov said, “Russia-Pakistan military ties are commercial in nature. With India our military partnership is deep and we offer long credit to India for acquiring military supplies. Therefore the nature of two relationships is different.” Kabulov, an old Afghanistan hand, stressed that Islamic State or Daesh is emerging as the main terrorist group not only in Afghanistan but across regions and suggested that India should remain cautious against this threat.

MMS was million times better than Modi when it came to foreign policy.

MMS was successful in obtaining waiver for nuclear deals and did not budge on nuclear liability clause.

He did not budge on foundational, drug patent or climate change agreements.

What is expected of an Indian PM was that he/she would be successful in balancing both US & Russia relations at best and replace one with the other at worst.

But here we have Modi ignoring and breaking the relations with Russia with no substantial improvement in relations with US.

Modi's foreign policy performance has been worse than the worst.

Again blaming India for Russian hijinks in a passive aggressive way. This government is buying two Russian frigates ,we do not need; is buying S-400 over Arrow and THAAD/PAC-3; and would probably buy FGFA. It is not our fault that Russian behaves like Kumbhkaran whose hunger can never be satiated unless we turn keys of our treasury to him.

The problem with Russophiles is that they lack all objectivity and common sense. They want India to rub its nose in dirt, stop diversifying, turn keys of treasury to Russians, and become a protectorate of Russia. You just brought tens of billions of worth of hardware from Russians but they are supporting Pakistan: It is all India's fault as it has not brought even more hardware from Russians. Tens of billions are not enough; in fact nothing would ever be enough from mutter Russia. And how dare they reduce their dependency on Russia by buying some French and American equipment.

All while oblivious to the fact that Russia has long ago moved into enemy camp and there is no returning back to 1972, irrespective of how much India grovel and begs and demean itself.

What Western-philes don't realize is that no amount of sycophancy would please the west.

The reality is while David sling is not available for procurement by India, Russia S-400 is available

Here comes the pied-piper Modi and we know who are blindly following him...

As if sycophancy to Russians would please Russia! If Russia is not satisfied with purchases that are worth more than their defence budget of the year, what else would satisfy Russia? Should we turn over keys of our treasury to Russians, and accept being their protectorate?

It is only blind Russophiles who put blame of deterioration of Indo-Russian relations on India. India has not done anything that would warrant deterioration, and has bought Russian equipment in every increasing quantity and value. It is not our fault that Russia has accepted to become junior partner of China.

It was Russia that broke the relationship, not India.

Good for them. If Russia wants to move away from India, I am all for it. Onus of breaking ties will be on Russia.

Foreign Policy of this govt has been much better than any previous govts. No more mollycoddling . No more dictation. India is rising, and Russia should get used to this.

India under MMS had bought C-130Js , C-17s, P-8Is from US yet he was able to maintain the relations with Russia while ever since Modi took over the Indo-Russian relations went south and Russia had started to court Pakistan at India's expense.

The trio of Modi, Doval & Jaishankar are clearly responsible for this colossal failure...
