Vettel on top as gearbox glitch halts Alonso

Sebastian Vettel headed a Red Bull one-two in the first practice session for the Indian Grand Prix.

However his only remaining championship rival Fernando Alonso suffered a blow as an apparent gearbox failure forced an early end to his session. The Ferrari driver crept back into the pits without changing gear having completed just half-a-dozen laps.

Vettel’s best time, set on medium tyres, was almost a full second faster than the best time in the same session last year, when the drivers were on hard tyrs.

Mark Webber was second, less than two tenths of a second behind Vettel, with a slender gap over third-placed Nico Rosberg.

There was a large gap between the Lotus drivers, Romain Grosjean fourth on a 1’26.990 and Kimi Raikkonen 1.8 seconds down on that in 17th, indicating the the pair were on very different programmes.

Lewis Hamilton moved up to fifth late in the running after a few lock-ups earlier on. He also caused some consternation at Force India by holding up Adrian Sutil in the final few laps before the chequered flag. “I don’t know what Hamilton’s doing, he seemed to slow down every time we wanted a lap,” said Sutil’s engineer Brad Joyce.

The two McLarens appeared in the top ten along with Felipe Massa’s Ferrari, Nico Hulkenberg and Valtteri Bottas. The other Williams of Pastor Maldonado was 14th following a spin.

James Calado, the only reserve driver participating in the session, also suffered a spin at turn 15 without damaging his Force India.

Vettel leads another Red Bull one-two in India

Second practice for the Indian Grand Prix had the same result as the previous five practice sessions at the Buddh International Circuit: Sebastian Vettel was quickest.

As in first practice the Red Bull drivers topped the times, with almost three tenths of a second separating Vettel from team mate Mark Webber. Vettel had a KERS problem earlier in the session as he did on Saturday in Japan.

Romain Grosjean came closest to the Red Bulls but was almost half a second slower than Vettel. Kimi Raikkonen was eighth after running wide at turn ten during his fastest lap on the soft tyres.

Several drivers found the front-left tyre was wearing out very quickly, particularly when using the soft compound.

Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso completed the top five ahead of their respectively team mates – Alonso avoiding a repeat of his first practice gearbox problems. McLaren pair Sergio Perez and Jenson Button were ninth and tenth.

Pastor Maldonado missed the final 20 minutes of running after suffering a wheel nut problem on his Williams for the second Friday running. His front-right wheel nut came off in turn five, and he had to pull to a stop before the pit lane entrance, though unlike in Japan the wheel remained on the car.

Vettel quickest again in shortened final session

Sebastian Vettel was fastest in all three practice sessions for the Indian Grand Prix for the second year in a row.

The Red Bull driver set a quickest time of 1’25.332 early in the session, then spent the remaining laps doing a longer run on the softer tyres.

The start of practice was delayed for 20 minutes as thick smog at the track was impairing visibility, meaning the medical helicopter would be unable to take off in case of an emergency. That meant the session was cut to 40 minutes.

Mark Webber made it another one-two for Red Bull, though his best time was over half a second slower than Vettel’s.

Fernando Alonso was next for Ferrari, over three-quarters of a second slower than Vettel, with Nico Hulkenberg’s Sauber next.

The quickest Lotus was on fifth place, Romain Grosjean lapping a second off Vettel’s time. He made a mistake at turn eleven towards the end of the session and held up Lewis Hamilton as he returned to the track, spoiling the Mercedes driver’s run.

Paul di Resta was an encouraging seventh for Force India at their home event, the quickest Mercedes-powered runner.

During the session a Sauber driver hit one of the team’s mechanics during a pit stop. The team reported the mechanic suffered bruising in the incident.

Mercedes F1 team principal Brawn to leave team

LONDON, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Ross Brawn will step down from the role as the principal of Mercedes F1 team, the team announced on Thursday.

According to a statement, Brawn will hand over leadership to Toto Wolff as business director, and Paddy Lowe, as technical director.

"The most important consideration in my decision to step down from the role as team principal was to ensure that the timing was right for the team in order to ensure its future success," Brawn said.

The 59-year-old Briton won five consecutive drivers' titles with Michael Schumacher at Ferrari.
