Hamilton edges Alonso as Monza practice begins
    [IMG]

Lewis Hamilton was quickest as practice began for the Italian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver was fractionally faster than Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso.

Alonso was on course to beat Hamilton’s 1’25.565 when he lost time in the final sector and had to settle for second, 0.035s off the Mercedes. Hamilton also came close to beating his own mark but couldn’t repeat his sector three time.

Nico Rosberg underlined Mercedes’ potential with the third-fastest time, followed by Sebastian Vettel.

Lotus brought a longer version of the E21 which Kimi Raikkonen ran and set fifth-fastest time with. Team mate Romain Grosjean in the conventional car was four-tenths of a second slower in 12th.

The McLaren drivers were sixth and seventh ahead of Mark Webber. Early in the session Jenson Button’s DRS remained activated at a part of the circuit where is was supposed to disengage, which the stewards are investigating.

Pastor Maldonado was an encouraging ninth for Williams, despite losing the rear of his car at Ascari, and reported the car was performing better in low-speed corners. Jean-Eric Vergne completed the top ten.

Nico Hulkenberg’s session was interrupted by a gearbox problem. He was able to make it back to the pits but when the team sent him out again the problem recurred and he was pulled back into his box.

In his first F1 practice session appearance James Calado was 17th for Force India, half a second slower than team mate Paul di Resta.

As the session came to an end both Ferrari drivers headed to the end of the pit lane to perform practice starts. Alonso got there in time but the pit exit lights turned red as Felipe Massa arrived and he locked his brakes as he brought the car to a stop. While Alonso performed his practice start, Ferrari mechanics arrived to push him back to the garage.

Vettel well clear ahead of rivals in second practice
    [IMG]

No one could get within six-tenths of a second of Sebastian Vettel during the second practice session at Monza.

Vettel’s quickest time on hard tyres was faster than anyone else could manage on mediums. When he put the softer tyres on he trimmed his time by three-tenths of a second to head the charts on a 1’24.453.

The world champion was the only driver to post a sub-85 second lap. Mark Webber made it a one-two for Red Bull, bouncing back from a KERS problem at the beginning of the session to set a best time of 1’25.116.

He was followed by the two Lotus drivers, both of which set laps which were identical to the nearest thousandth of a second. This was despite Kimi Raikkonen running the longer-wheelbase version of the E21 while Romain Grosjean used the conventional car.

Fernando Alonso put his Ferrari in the top five, albeit 0.877s off Vettel after running wide at Lesmo 2 during one of his runs. Several other drivers went off during the session.

Among them was Lewis Hamilton, who ran wide at the exit of Parabolica, as Raikkonen also had earlier on. Hamilton ended the session sixth followed by team mate Nico Rosberg.

Felipe Massa was eighth despite pitting before the end of the session with a gearbox problem. The two McLaren drivers completed the top ten, both over a second off the flying Vettel.

Vettel stays on top by reduced margin at Monza
    [IMG]

Sebastian Vettel remains the driver to beat at Monza but his pursuers were closer in the final practice session ahead of qualifying.

Vettel set the quickest time of the weekend so far with a lap of 1’24.360 but Fernando Alonso’s best effort was within three-tenths of a second of him.

Ferrari were leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to get on terms with Red Bull, instructing their drivers to give each other tows on the straight to improve their lap times. Felipe Massa ended up seventh, 0.6s off Vettel’s time.

Mark Webber was third ahead of Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes. Sergio Perez was fifth for McLaren on his medium-tyre run after damaging his front-right tyre while running on hards earlier in the session.

A late improvement from Daniel Ricciardo saw him take sixth for Toro Rosso, clocking 340kph through the speed trap as he did so.

Jenson Button was eighth ahead of Pastor Maldonado, who gave Williams some encouragement with the ninth fastest time.

Having been ‘best of the rest’ behind Red Bull on Friday, Lotus could only manage tenth for Kimi Raikkonen and 14th for Romain Grosjean, both drivers complaining of a lack of grip.

Paul di Resta’s session came to an end when he went off at Parabolica, hitting the barrier head-on. “Something broke there,” said Di Resta before climbing out of his car. Moments later the other Force India of Adrian Sutil spun at Ascari but without hitting anything.

Nico Rosberg only managed five laps before an overheating problem on his Mercedes ended his session.

Hamilton on top as times tumble in Singapore

Lewis Hamilton was quickest in the first practice session for the Singapore Grand Prix.

The Mercedes driver’s best lap of 1’47.055 was three-and-a-half seconds faster than the quickest time from the same session last year. The alterations to turn ten, plus resurfacing at several points on the track, appear to have contributed to the fall in lap times.

An uneventful session ended with Hamilton followed by the two Red Bull drivers and the second Mercedes of team mate Nico Rosberg.

A steering fault was diagnosed on Romain Grosjean’s car during his installation lap and he spent over an hour in the pits having it repaired. Once he returned to the track he lapped just a thousandth of a second off team mate Kimi Raikkonen.

Fernando Alonso was the fastest Ferrari in seventh with team mate Felipe Massa outside the top ten.

Eighth-placed Sergio Perez was over two seconds off Hamilton’s time, with Jean-Eric Vergne ninth for Toro Rosso. Esteban Gutierrez put his Sauber in tenth place despite struggling with rear tyre degradation in the last sector.

Red Bull comfortably quickest in second practice

Red Bull were emphatically fastest in the second practice session in Singapore.

Sebastian Vettel produced a lap of 1’44.249 on the super-soft tyres putting him more than half a second fastest than team mate Mark Webber and a second quicker than the other runners.

However Webber had been the quickest of the two Red Bulls while they were circulating on the medium compounds. Most drivers found a significant performance gain from the softer tyres in the region of two seconds per lap.

Behind the flying Red Bulls there was little separating the Mercedes drivers from the quickest of the Lotuses. That was Romain Grosjean, who endured another disrupted session.

Grosjean again missed some of the early running due to car problems. Once he joined the track he reported braking problems, then pulled into the pits again with a quarter of an hour to go. Despite the interruptions he managed to post the fifth-quickest time.

Fernando Alonso was sixth for Ferrari with team mate Felipe Massa 1.2 seconds slower in 15th place. His future team mate Kimi Raikkonen was eighth, Jenson Button separating the pair.

One of the Force Indias made it into the top ten thanks to Adrian Sutil, who was two hundredths of a second faster than Sergio Perez’s McLaren.

The only driver to make contact with the wall was Pastor Maldonado, who ran wide at turn 13 and nudged a barrier with his front wing. That forced him into the pits for a replacement.

Vettel stays on top in Singapore as Grosjean gains

Sebastian Vettel remained the driver to beat in Singapore but Red Bull’s rivals narrowed the gap during the final practice session.

Vettel improved on his quickest time from yesterday by a tenth of a second but Romain Grosjean was within two tenths of a second of Vettel’s benchmark time.

However at the end of the session Grosjean warned his team he was concerned the braking problem he’d experienced yesterday still hadn’t been completely cured.

Nico Rosberg was third-fastest for Mercedes but over half a second slower than Vettel.

As in yesterday’s second practice session drivers found the super-soft tyre was in the region of two seconds per lap faster than the medium. Mark Webber was the quickest driver on the track before the drivers began using the super-soft tyre, edging team mate Vettel by less than a tenth of a second. He ended the session fourth.

The Ferrari remained the fourth-quickest car in Fernando Alonso’s hands, behind Lewis Hamilton and a full second slower than Vettel.

Both McLaren’s were inside the top ten, separated by Nico Hulkenberg’s Sauber, and ahead of the second Ferrari of Felipe Massa.

Kimi Raikkonen didn’t set a representative time on the super-soft tyres and ended up 12th. The struggling Force Indias were also outside the top ten, Paul di Resta having a spin at turn 14 early in the session.

Formula 1 - Singapore GP - Drivers’ special Singapore helmets in pictures

Three F1 drivers have donned special helmets for this weekend’s race in Singapore. Here’s a closer look at what they’re wearing.

Lewis Hamilton is sporting a white design similar to the one he used last year. Giedo van der Garde has also traded his usual colours for a white helmet.

Taking advantage of Singapore’s unique night race, Jean-Eric Vergne has a helmet which glows in the dark:
