MUMBAI: A farmer's agitation to protest land acquisition by the government near Pune turned violent and resulted in police firing that caused four deaths on Tuesday.

Mumbai-Pune expressway and old highway (NH4) were blocked for over four hours by the agitators and traffic on both the highways was totally disrupted. A few days back, the state government launched the process of land acquisition in the area near Vadgaon close to Pune for a water pipeline.

This pipeline is meant to carry water from Pawna dam to Pimpari-Chinchwad suburbs of Pune. Pune district police chief S Karnik said farmers in the area between Wadgaon and Talegaon had announced their opposition to the land acquisition process.

On Tuesday afternoon farmers gathered in large numbers to protest the land acquisition and they first blocked the old Mumbai- Pune highway. This caused major disruption of heavy vehicle traffic and it was diverted to the expressway. After a while a group of farmers shifted to the expressway and also blocked that road.

Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on the expressway from about 1.30 pm onwards. The protestors also pelted stones on the police team that was trying to remove them from the road. The mob in Talegaon got violent and torched a police vehicle. Finally, the police resorted to firing. Four protestors were killed in this firing.

Police sources gave the names as Moreshwar Sathe, Sham Tupe, Maruti Kirad and Shanta Thackre. The mob was chased away and both highways were opened for traffic by the evening.

The issue was raised in the state Assembly where the government assured the Opposition that an enquiry into the entire incident will be carried out. Both the Houses of the Maharashtra legislature were adjourned following ruckus over the police firing.
