PARIS — France and Germany have agreed to develop a European fighter jet to replace their existing fleets, part of a raft of measures to tighten defense and security cooperation, according to a document issued after a Franco-German cabinet meeting in Paris on Thursday.

The two countries are to come up with a roadmap for developing the new aircraft by mid 2018, the document said.

The two governments also agreed to set up a cooperation framework for the next model of the Tiger attack helicopter and for tactical air-to-ground missiles.

The document also said the two countries agreed to work together on procuring ground systems including heavy tanks and artillery, and that a contract was expected to be signed before 2019 for the German-led Eurodrone project.

The combat aircraft project buries a split which saw France withdraw from the Eurofighter project in the 1980s to produce its own Rafale warplane via Dassault Aviation.

The document stated that the new combat system, which analysts say could involve a mixture of manned and unmanned aircraft, would replace both the Eurofighter and the Rafale.

However, it did not say what if any role Britain - Europe's leading military power and a partner in the Eurofighter fighter project alongside Germany, Spain and Italy - would play in developing the new successor.

Europe currently has three fighter planes, the Eurofighter Typhoon, France's Rafale and Sweden's Gripen - whereas many defense analysts say there is room for only one combat plane in future because of budget pressures and huge development costs.

France and Germany Plan New 5th Generation Fighter, is it an Opportunity for India?
Published July 14, 2017 SOURCE: Anand SG / FOR MY TAKE / IDRW.ORG

France and Germany have announced their intention to work together to develop a new advanced “European” 5th Generation fighter jet which will be the successor to the France’s Dassault Rafales and Germany’s Eurofighter Typhoons. France and German are planning to come up with a Road Map by Mid of 2018.

European fighter jet is still in infancy and a clean slate program which India has been looking for long to help its workforce get enough experience in design and development of advanced 5th generation fighter jet so that it can be helpful to develop its own 5th generation AMCA fighter aircraft.

Lack of Progress on Indo-Russian proposed FGFA 5th Generation fighter jet suggests that difference between two over work share agreements, price and transfer of technology has not lead to any breakthrough even after both concluded a design agreements Nearly Seven Years ago. Since France and Germany are yet to work out basic requirements for development of new European fighter jet it can be predicted somewhat that new fighter jet will be Twin-engined Medium Class Stealth Fighter jet designed for Air-Superiority and Strike Missions just like the predecessor they will be replacing.

France and Germany both have the technology required to develop this new jet and it is expected the new jet will enter production by 2030 and will have continued production line even beyond 2040. While Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale are still getting export orders and technologically are still relevant but growing export orders of American F-35 5th Generation fighter jet will soon lead to sharp fall in its price due to a streamlined production line leading to prospective future customers moving away from 4.5++ Generation fighters like Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale in long run since both are still 80’s designed fighter jets which cannot incorporate Stealth in any future variants .

For India, it could be a win-win situation if a deal for FGFA with Russia is scrapped ultimately and India is able to stay away from American temptation called F-35. If India is able to become third partner country in the project it will bring in required R&D investment money and also come with committed number of fighter jet order. Since the Project is a Clean Slate development of a 5th Generation fighter jet, India can add its required inputs and requirements and will also be able to contribute its own technology for the project and vice versa also receive transfer of technology and along with ownership status to profit from any future export.

    Opportunity for India ?

What has India to offer ? AESA? Engine ? Missiles ? Guided Weapons ? Self Protection Suite ? Avionics System ? Metallurgy ? Composite technology ? Stealth technology ?

Does it even has the resource to do funding ??

The writer of IDRW is as usual a head less chicken , not knowing a $hit about either this project or PMF.

And yes, AMCA is nothing. Get out of dreams. We only have PMF.

    Very true!!!!!!!!

DRDO is TROLLING big TIME in the name of AMCA.......... It is sequel of Tejas in making "TEJAS RETURNS".:hitwall::hitwall::hitwall::hitwall:

From 2009 we are seeing pictures, models of AMCA and listening AMCA will have this and that but it is now 2017 not even funds released no TDs, no prototypes and even if they come out with prototypes it would be 2025 and it would take at least 15 years of testing to reach FOC that would be 2040. The world then will be moving to 6th gen pilot-less fighters and IAF will term it as three legged CHEETAH and Obsolete for current threat and will be put into dust bin just like Tejas.

Before AMCA we should get the building blocks in place.

Get AESA , get weapons [A2A, A2G, etc], get integrated Self Protection System, get Targeting Pod ,and please invest a bit more on engines, etc

When one has these things in place, AMCA or anything will be in inservice within 5-8 years.

Don't be surprised if Indonesia has its own 5th gen fighter before us.

Maybe India should first grab one opportunity before grabbing another.
