France's 2018 defence budget includes increases in funding of new equipment, cyber defence, and research and development (R&D), a member of the National Assembly has said.

Speaking during technology demonstrations at Nexter in Versailles, part of his election district, on 17 October, Didier Baichere, member of the assembly's national defence committee, said the EUR34.2 billion (USD40.2 billion) defence budget allocates EUR18.5 billion for equipment, a 7% increase over the EUR17.3 billion in 2017.

It also includes EUR4.67 billion for R&D and EUR720 million for studies, "financing demonstrators for technological breakthroughs, and, more broadly, budgetary support of the ground defence industrial and technological base".

Good that Macron was forced to agree. He made a pretty stupid decision at the time.

Countries like France cannot reduce defence budgets.
