This picture makes me dream of an Indian AC with a full compliment of Rafales steaming past the Indian Ocean with her full CBG.

P.S: A dream, turning into reality in the not so distant future.

    Good Day!

It was to celebrate the 100th year of the creation of the Lafayette Escadrille.

It is the Alpha helmet of the british HISL. (Helmet Integrated Systems Lt)

New Aircrew Helmet for the French DGA

Helmet Integrated Systems Ltd is to commence delivery of a new lightweight aircrew helmet developed for the French DGA (Direction Générale de l’Armement) to be used throughout the rotary and non-ejection fixed wing fleet of the three French services:
    • ALAT (Aviation Légère de l’Armée de Terre)
    • AA (Armée de l’Air)
    • AN (Aéro Navale)

The aircrew helmet incorporates a number of new features associated with the varied operational needs of all three services throughout the world.

Crash protection was a key feature in the design of the helmet, the materials used, and particular attention was given to the need to meet stringent flame engulfment trials, at temperatures of 800°C

This lightweight aircrew helmet (<1.7kg) which incorporates a lower face guard, lip light and dual clear/tinted visor with cover, includes provision for the mounting and powering of a range of night vision goggles.

Oxygen masks can be fitted for high altitude operations, and the helmet is compatible with nuclear bacteriological chemical (NBC) masks
A quantity of helmets are fitted with active noise reduction headsets (ANR), and a microphone parasite noise reduction system is a feature of helmets used by winch men and side gunners

    Rob Crick, Project Director commented:

"Achieving qualification of this helmet with the French government to a very demanding spec is a fantastic achievement. We've had many technical challenges along the way, but thanks to our high calibre R&D team and our very close relationship with our customer, we have overcome every single difficulty. As a result we have a helmet which can be integrated into 28 aircraft types, ranging from the Alouette 3 and Transall to NH90 and A400M "

Thales wins French army's small drone requirement

According to several sources,Thales won the french army's mini drone requirement,SMDR. (système de minidrones de renseignement).
The contract worth about €100mn,will be signed in the coming weeks and will see the delivery of 200 Spy'Ranger drones to the french army to replace the current Airbus' DRAC (drone de reconnaissance au contact).
The drone is based on a platform developped by a small/medium french group called Aviation Design.
Thales which lost french army's tactical drones requirement is awarded this one.
The competition was very tough and saw the participation of many french groups (Thales,Airbus,Safran),but also foreign. (Israelis and american).

French Air Force trains eagles to prey on rogue drones

The French air force is hoping to have a new weapon its armour to fight against drones that may be used by terrorists – eagles.

The French air force is busy training up eagles to be able to take down rogue drones that may be used in a terrorist attack.

According to the French air force, drones constitute “a credible threat for a terrorist mode of action on our national territory just as they do for external operations.”

While current weapons to take down drones include "jammers" and other emerging technology, the air force sees eagles as the most effective and least expensive way to disable the devices.

“The eagles could be used in major events like the July 14th, G20 meetings or big international conferences like the recent COP 21,” an air force spokesperson told L’Express newspaper.

“In certain situations, when debris could fall onto the crowd below, the drone cannot be shot down. The eagle can intercept the device without causing extra damage.”

The air force acquired eagle eggs in spring this year and the birds began their training in the summer, when they were big enough.

They have been taught that there is food on the drones, and now when they see one of these devices they intercept. We are training them not just to attack them, but to detect them.

The air force is hoping to be able to use the eagles in real situations from the summer of 2017 onwards. The tactic of employing eagles to fight drones has already been used by police in the Netherlands.

In recent years months and years France has been troubled by the potential threat from drones.

Reminds me of the US navy combat dolphins (against mines and nets).

Mother nature truly is the most efficient however much we try to emulate :)
