India Launches A $15,000 Electric Car, With No Help From The Government

As India’s first new electric car in more than a decade was officially launched today in New Delhi, one thing was glaringly absent: a hoped-for government subsidy of at least 150,000 Indian rupees (U.S. $2,769) that would make the car actually affordable.

The Mahindra e2o (pronounced ee-two-oh) is a two-door, four-seater hatchback with snazzy styling and amenities that are rare in Indian cars, such as an automatic transmission and the ability to lock the car and work the A/C with a mobile app. It will inoculate its buyers from rising gas prices, provide relief from tailpipe exhaust on India’s polluted streets, and (if enough people buy it) stem India’s contribution of planet-warming greenhouse gases.

But drivers will also find that, outside of New Delhi, the car will cost more than $15,000, thousands of dollars more than comparable gas-powered vehicles that have more range and power. (Delhi has its own subsidy that drops the price to $11,003). The lithium-ion battery allows a range of 100 kilometers (62 miles) before recharge, and a top speed of 80 kilometers (50 miles) an hour — also significantly less than similar gas-powered hatchbacks. Drivers will be paying top dollar, without any of the government subsidies that are offered to electric-car buyers in the U.S., Europe or China.

“The Mahindra e2o is a near perfect amalgam of the dramatic advancements in automotive technology, electronics and information technology – a unique synthesis that we believe will help us shape and co-create, with our customers, the future of personal mobility solutions, as we know them,†said Chetan Maini, the founder of Reva, at the unveiling at New Delhi’s India Gate.

The event was also attended, ironically, by the government ministers of renewable energy and heavy industry, who have so far failed to deliver a subsidy that Mahindra considers crucial to the car’s fortunes. The government has lagged in its promise to create a $4.13 billion program to support electric transportation. Maini told me in January that he expected that plan to give a rebate of at least 150,000 rupees to each buyer of an e20. Since today’s announcements were silent on the subject, it appears that Mahindra decided to roll out the car despite its prohibitive, unsubsidized price.

The company announced the price as 596,000 rupees ($11,003), but that’s only the price in the capital city of New Delhi, which offers a 29 percent subsidy on the purchase of electric cars. Without that subsidy, other Indians will pay closer to 839,000 rupees ($15,489). The car will first be sold in the major cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Kochi and Ahmedabad.

That puts the car above the price range of comparable gas-powered hatchbacks in India, such as the the Maruti Suzuki Swift, which starts at 449,000 rupees ($8,289) and nearly double the price of economy models like the Maruti Alto, which starts at 321,000 rupees ($5,926). The price tag also means that Mahindra fell short of its goal of pegging the car at 15 to 20 percent above the sticker price of gas-powered cars, as articulated by Pawan Goenka, the president of Mahindra’s automotive and farm sector.

The e20 is a second act for electric car maker Reva, which for more than a decade struggled to win acceptance of its first offering, the REVAi. In 2010, as Reva was planning its new wheels, the company was purchased by the Indian industrial conglomerate Mahindra. Several months ago, Mahindra Reva debuted its new factory, which it expects to make 30,000 e2os a year within three years.

The e2o is a significant improvement in style over the utilitarian REVAi, but the first test drives are getting mixed reviews.

This tweet, made soon after the launch, seems to sum up both the promise and the problems of today’s subsidy-free launch of the e2o.

An electric car is an automobile that is propelled by one electric motor or more, using electrical energy stored in batteries or another energy storage device. Electric motors give electric cars instant torque, creating strong and smooth acceleration.

Electric cars were popular in the late 19th century and early 20th century, until advances in internal combustion engine technology and mass production of cheaper gasoline vehicles led to a decline in the use of electric drive vehicles. The energy crises of the 1970s and 1980s brought a short-lived interest in electric cars, though those cars did not reach mass marketing as today's electric cars experience it. Since the mid-2000s, the production of electric cars is experiencing a renaissance due to advances in battery and power management technologies and concerns about increasingly volatile oil prices and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

    Tata Indica Vista Electric

Tata's Indica Vista is a flagship model of the company and won overwhelming customer response and two prestigious auto awards in India. The Tata Indica Vista Electric will become the second electric car to be exported from India followed by Reva's G-Wiz. The electric variant of Tata Indica Vista is equipped with Prem magnet motor a.k.a. super polymer lithium ion batteries which is regarded as superior than traditional batteries. Owing to this kind of super batteries, the electric Tata Indica Vista Electric will be more powerful and faster than its gasoline and diesel variants exist in India. The battery pumps out 55 kw of peak power at 4,000 rpm and generates 160 Nm of top torque at 1750 rpm. The battery capacity is, according to Tata Motors, 26.5 kwh.

The electric car of Tata will have a peak speed of around 151 kmph. In a single charge, the car is claimed to go up to 200km that is an attractive piece of engineering by Tata Motors. The charging time of batteries may be around 8 hours. Equipped with super power batteries, the car will touch 0-30kmph sprint in just 4.5 seconds and 0-60 kmph in just under 10 seconds, another amazing fact about the car. The car has one speed FWD.

The five door electric hatchback has a seating capacity of 4 passengers. The vehicle is learnt to have 2 airbags only for driver and front passenger. Apart from flowing lines and sports dynamic, the car is not different from its predecessor. The front face of the car comes in the typical Tata style-smiling face. The smiling face of the car become alive with headlamp, grille, fog lamps and lower grille. Body colour rear side view mirrors, door handles and bumper give the vehicle the required appeal. The car is more spacious and decorated with stunning interior features. A pretty luggage space is another impressive feature.

Electric vehicles are free from the worry of mileage and battery consumed as both the things are understood. Mileage will be many times better than petrol and diesel vehicles with zero emissions. Apart from that per kilometer cost is much lower. So here, the Tata Indica Vista Electric will be equipped with super polymer lithium ion batteries which is regarded as the best and sophisticated so far. The powerhouse of the electric vehicle generates a peak power of 55kw and churns out maximum torque of 160 Nm. The vehicle can be driven upto 200km after a single charge which might take around 8 hours.

As per Tata Motors, the Tata Indica Vista Electric will be loaded with super polymer lithium ion batteries named as Prem Magnet Motor. These motors are being developed by a company called TM4. The super polymer lithium ion batteries are the latest one's and are lightweight, has high energy density and lack of thermal runaway issues.

The powerful and advanced batteries produces a peak power of 55kw at 4,000 rpm and pumps out 160 Nm of top torque at 1750 rpm. As a result, the electric version of Tata Indica is believed to be more powerful and agile than its petrol and diesel variants at present. The 26.5 kwh's battery can produce a top speed of 151 kmph. You can roam up to 200 km with fully charged battery of the car. The battery can be charged in around 8 hours. It also shows its power and acceleration strength by touching 0-30 kmph and 0-60 kmph sprint in just 4.5 seconds and 10 seconds respectively.

The Tata Indica Vista Electric will be powered by a Prem Magnet Motor, developed by TM4, that capable enough to belts out 55kw of maximum power and 160 Nm of peak torque. In a single charge, it can give a range of 200 km whereas it might take around 8 hours to charge the super polymer lithium ion batteries. The top speed of the car is expected to be 151 kmph. Similarly, the 0-30kmph acceleration would be chased in 4.5 seconds while the vehicle will cover 0-60 sprint in mere 10 seconds.

It is said that the United States destroyed the development of electric cars to save the petro dollar.

This is not my opinion, but many ppl speculate it.

Car sales are down by as much as 20% all over the Auto Industry in India
due to rising prices, taxes and fuel costs as well

Electric cars are bound to gain more ground as this get worse of the Petro Chemical front
even i am considering buying a electric car, although there are several out there
but, there isn't any in the India market that has yet caught my imagination

The Tesla Model S is a full-sized electric four-door hatchback sports sedan produced by Tesla Motors. First shown to the public at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show as a prototype, retail deliveries started in the United States in June 2012.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) official range for the Model S Performance model equipped with an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is 265 miles (426 km), topping the Tesla Roadster and making the Model S the electric car with the greatest range available in the market.

The EPA range for the model with the 60 kW·h battery is 208 mi (335 km). EPA's energy consumption is rated at 237.5 W·h per kilometre (38 kW·h/100 mi) for a combined fuel economy of 89 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (2.64 L/100 km). Tesla had also scheduled the release of a base model with a smaller 40 kW·h battery expected to deliver a range of 160 miles (260 km) but decided against this entry-level model.

Tesla allocated the first 1,000 sedans off the production line to a Signature and Signature Performance limited edition, equipped with the 85 kW·h battery pack, and priced in the U.S. at US$95,400 and US$105,400 respectively, before any applicable U.S. federal and local government tax credits and incentives. The base Model S starts at US$69,900 with a 60 kW·h battery pack up to US$79,900 with the 85 kW·h pack before any government subsidies. Since its introduction, cumulative sales reached around 9,650 units through April 2013, with most units delivered in the U.S. The Model S ranked as the top selling plug-in electric car in North America during the first quarter of 2013 with 4,900 cars sold, ahead of the Chevrolet Volt (4,421) and the Nissan Leaf (3,695)
