    Arjun Tank May Miss Date Again

    The domestically produced Arjun Tank beat the Russian T-90 tanks hollow in the field trials, but it may again miss the date for its delivery to the Indian Army in 2015, because of the new conditions slapped by the Indian Army procurers every time the state-run DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) came forward to declare ready its production.

    On the recommendations of the Army, the Defence Ministry has kept demanding newer and newer additions in the Arjun Tank Mark-2 that its total weight has gone up and now DRDO is being posed the challenge to reduce its weight. The new challenges are thrown at DRDO every time trial of its tanks were completed against the order placed with it in 2010 for producing 124 such tanks.

    When the trial was over, a new demand was made that the Army needs night vision device on the gunner side of tanks. The Chennai-based Heavy Vehicles Factory of DRDO complied with the demand, the Army sought a similar device also on the commander side. That too was complied with when a fresh demand came to install 120mm gun for anti-tank guided missiles. The gun was fitted when the demand came that it should be rather a laser gun.

    Since the laser guns are not produced indigenously, DRDO bought them from Israel and installed them. The Army, however, rejected these guns for too much smoke it produces and sought more changes. An insider says as many as 72 technical changes have been incorporated by DRDO since I got the original order in 2010. The Defence Ministry insists that all these changes were felt necessary to have a most modern tank with the Army, but those in DRDO now smell a deliberate attempt to browbeat the public sector company to give up and let the government import the tanks from abroad.

    Nobody in the Defence Ministry is ready to listen that so many changes have made the tanks costlier and heavier and hence the designs will have to be reworked to reduce price and weight and hence DRDO cannot make the delivery on time as announced by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar without understanding the politics that goes on in the ministry.

    Good to see DefMin Parrikar after supporting IAF fully supporting IA in rejecting this 75 ton $10million joke

    And finally the FMBT design itself. Though this design is not frozen it gives us some insights.

    @vstol jockey

    This is your post from MRCA thread.
    And this is from Saurav Jha's article.

    The T-90 is already planned to get Arjun upgrades. T-90s electronics are very old, more than 15 years while Arjun's electronics are very new. So a lot of the firepower advantages that the Arjun had over the T-90 will be non-existent with the new upgrades.

    We were discussing T-90MS and that is the latest tank from Russia of which 347 copies were ordered. That tank was built after noticing the shortcomings w.r.t Arjun and whatever additional things were asked for by IA like remote gun control etc were incorporated in it. IA deliberately delayed the face off between T-90 and Arjun so that these things cud be added to T-90. Even after that T-90 lost the battle.
    Regarding what Jha writes is none of my concerns but someone shud ask him why shud we buy second rate equipment and than update it to be at par with India produced equipment? Does this make any sense whatsoever?
    I can understand such a make over for old T-72s/T-90s already in service. But why buy a new tank and than upgrade it? The old ones upgraded like this can be easily deployed on eastern front.

    @randomradio

    saurav jah is NOT advocating that T90 be bought & upgraded from arjun systems

    he is merely stating the fact that IA is doing this

    & is also pointing out the senseless things which the IA doe, he was the 1st person to tweet about the Arjun v/s T90 CAG report

    also he points out

    when people say T90 is chepaer they forget that t90 is cheaper than arjun WITH ALL its deficiencies

    but when ARJUN tanks DRDO developed system are installed on T90 then the costs of T90 would also increase on account of costs of those systems + retrofitting charges etc etc

    saurav jha makes the same point as your are making

    How is it wise to buy a deficient T90Ms then upgrade it with systems from Arjun Tank just at the production floor .
    Upgrading it even before it leaves the factory

    He wasn't talking about the T-90MS. The T-90S will be upgraded to a higher standard with Arjun electronics.

    Indian Army To Upgrade T-90 Tanks With Domestic Help | Defense News | defensenews.com
    Arjun had the electronics advantage over the T-90, while T-90 had a more powerful gun. With the T-90 upgrade, the tank will have similar sighting system with a more powerful gun.

    And I don't think the T-90MS will be the same as what was shown by Russia. We may buy the T-90MS and then put our electronics on it, MKIzation.

    I know.

    I have nothing against upgrading old T-90s but to buy additional ones is wrong.

    theonly advantage T90 had over the arjun was that the gun was able to fire missiles

    there was no other gun advantage neither accuracy nor accuracy on the move

    go check his tweets & CAG report again

    Stop import of everything in Indian armed forces. Unless we start making equipments for the armed forces and then get feedback as to the improvements required and then implement those improvements to get an world class product, Indian defence industry will always be a child's play to western and Russian defence industries.
    I firmly believe, that the amount we spend to import foreign products for our armed forces, if spent to develop indigenous equipments, we would have had many homegrown world class defence products. But our "ladle" armed forces needs imported products including imported daru :mrgreen:, perhaps except the Navy.
    Shame on the officers....!!!
