Gang Rape by Indian Army in front of husband at Indo-Bhutan border
    By- Correspondent | Date- September 12, 2011

In a heinous incident, not new to the rural North East India, a woman from rural Kokrajhar district near the Indo- Bhutan border was allegedly gang raped by Jawans of SSB on the night of 10th September.

As per reports, a deaf and dumb 35 year old woman Deobari Basumatary, wife of Amal Basumatary was gang raped at night in front of her husband by the SSB Jawans. The incident happened at village No.1 Sonapur under Bismuri Police in the Kokrajhar district of Assam.

According to Amal Basumatary, husband of the victim, a group of SSB Jawans forcefully entered their house at around 11.30 pm, manhandled him and raped his wife in front of him. Later they dragged her to a nearby place and repeatedly raped her one after another.

The victim, Deobari Basumatary, her husband and the villagers, including the Gaonbura, came to Bismuri to file an FIR against the SSB Jawans on 11th September.

Noted human rights organization Borosa Foundation for Peace, Democracy and Human Rights have taken up the matter and have made a complaint to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) about the matter. In a press release issued by the organization, they have stated that “these incidents have exposed an ugly anti-people attitude of some rowdy and indiscipline Jawans involved in the crimes who are otherwise deployed to help in protecting lives and properties of the innocent people and maintain law and order in the trouble torn regionâ€￾. Condemning the incident, the organization stated that these are clear examples of Human Rights violation and because no appropriate actions was taken so far to punish the culprits involved in previous incidents, the crimes have been repeated again and again in the district.

Mentionable that some months back, one Manek Goyary of village Tharaibari of Choraikola was also reportedly raped by six 15 Dogra regiment stationed at Adabri on 20th April, 2011. An FIR was lodged at Kokrajhar police station but to no effect.

The incident has once again put a question mark over the functioning of the Indian Army in the north eastern region and the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) which is active in the region in spite of stiff resentment by the people of the region.

In 1962, China practically occupied 1/3rd of the north-east, but not a single incident of human right violation was reported... But in the 21st century, in view of broad eyes of the omnipresent medias, our own Army has been carrying out one after another incident of human right abuse on their own countrymen/women in the name of counter terrorism...

    Shame on our upbringing!!

the guilty must be punished and no one should be spared. violence in north east region has declined i guess its time to dilute provisions of AFSPA.

however, it is a bunch of individuals who have done this and please do not blame army for it.

I AM DEEPLY DISSAPOINTED AT THE SENSATIONALIST HEADLINE GIVEN BY THREAD STARTER WHO IS A SENIOR MEMBER AND MODERATOR. HE SHOULD HAVE SAID SSB PERSONNEL AND NOT INDIAN ARMY. ONE OUGHT TO KNOW THAT SSB IS A PARAMILITARY FORCE WORKING UNDER MINISTRY OF HOME AFFAIRS. DEEPLY DISSAPOINTED

Prostitution is not illegal in India provided one is doing it alone and away from public vicinity.

It is illegal. Legal as in US, where the sex workers r given ID cards, tested for STDs every 3-6 months etc.. I'm sure there's no such thing in India.

The headline is not given by me, but the newpaper. I, as a forum policy of not altering news headlines, kept it the way it was.

But the sentiment remains same G-n-R.. Our own security agencies are doing more abuses to our people, whether you agree to it or not. As a matter of fact, I am a little disapointed that you have chosen to highlight the headline over the grave and continuous human right abuses that been carried out under AFSPA.. be it in north-east or elsewhere. IMO, the highlighted part of your post should have been the first part.

    Anyway.. each to his own.

AFSPA should be withdrewn from north east & kasmir. This incidents will ony help anti terror organisation to grew roots in peoples mind.

AFPSA should be withdrawn, police should be given more freedom and traing.Army has to move to borders........

Even for naxalites bring in army is not the solution but giving proper tarining to police and imprving the life condtion of people is.....

It's not just the case of army,Violent crimes against women are rising in whole country. Many times done by very educated people,It questions our educational system.Lack of proper sexual education in school curriculum is always the problem.

Fire them and have them tried by a civilian court. The lower order are always under educated and vile, in that sense. Even countries such as Britain (who have had issues with their lower order, there is a recent case) and the US (Abu Ghraib) have these problems.

Armies are always full of criminal elements in the lower ranks... whichever Army they are.

U ought to have mentioned in ur first post that SSB is not part of Indian army. It is a paramilitary force under home ministry. there is little knowledge about defence in our media especially local news papers and channels. for them everything is Indian Army. it is the responsibility of people who r posting to give correct facts to all members and not encourage sensatinalist headlines.

I am all in favour of diluting AFSPA in both kashmir and North east and have voiced my opinion wenever the subject has come up.

the reason for highlighting second part of my post was to specifically remind you to be extra cautious when reporting on sensitive matters and to be accurate while reporting.

AFSPA should be withdrawn from the northeast and J&K. GnR is correct, SSB is not the Indian Army and the thread starter should hve corrected the mistake. It brings negative publicity to the Army, who are more disciplined than the paramilitary.
