The Indian Air Force (IAF) has accorded initial operational clearance (IOC) to the upgraded Jaguar after Deputy Chief of the Air Staff Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria flew the attack aircraft in Bangalore, the state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) said on Wednesday.

"Deputy Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal R.K.S. Bhadauria gave the IOC to the upgraded Jaguar Darin-III twin-seat aircraft after flying it here recently," said the defence behemoth in a statement.

The Jaguar fleet of the IAF is based at the Ambala air force station in the northwest state of Punjab. India currently has 145 of these fighters, inducted between 1981 and 1985, and plans to retire the aircraft by 2030.

As part of the IAF's modernisation plan, HAL is upgrading about 120 of the IAF's four-decade-old Anglo-French-built fighters, which can carry nuclear weapons like the French Mirage 2000s.

"The Jaguar upgrade is one of the best for data handling and overall capabilities," said Bhadauria after flying it with test pilot Wing Commander V Prabhakaran as co-pilot from HAL's airport in the city's eastern suburb.

The upgradation includes Jaguar's cockpit being fitted with autopilots, next generation avionics and lethal armaments at an estimated cost of Rs 3,000 crore to enhance its operational life till 2030. HAL's mission and combat system research and design centre developed the system requirement capture, software, hardware, electrical and mechanical equipment to modify the vintage fighter and extend its life.

The Jaguar is equipped with world-class avionics system and has open system architecture mission computer, engine and flight instrument system, fire control radar inertia, navigation system with GPS and geodetic height correction
HAL Chairman And Managing Director T Suvarna Raju
Besides HAL, certification agencies, trial team of the Aircraft Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) and other agencies were involved in upgrading the Jaguar to Darin-III from Darin-1 standard. The upgrade includes digital video recording system, flight data recorder, smart multi-function display, radio altimeter with 20,000 feet range and friend or foe identification facility.

Air Force Has Airlifted Over 160 Tonnes Of Banknotes Since November 19
Press Trust of India | Updated: Nov 28, 2016 20:23 IST

The Indian Air Force deployed AN 32, C130 J and C17 aircraft to carry new notes.
New Delhi: The Indian Air Force has airlifted over 160 tonnes of new currency notes from four printing presses to various parts of the country to cut down the time taken to transport cash from the source to main distribution centres to meet the surge in demand post demonetisation.

Sources said the Indian Air Force (IAF) was pressed into service on November 19 and it deployed AN 32, C130 J and C17 transport aircraft and helicopters for this purpose.

"Helicopters were already used for transporting cash to some remote areas of the Northeast. But the use of transport aircraft is a new thing," a source said.

The government roped in the IAF to cut down the transportation time for the delivery of banknotes after a shortage was felt in the market because of demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

Add to it a shortfall of 7 squadrons to make up the approved strength of 42 which was estimated at a time PLAAF was half its current strength. So technically a need for 18 squadrons in the force.

    Current Fleet:
    Su-30 MKI - 12 Squadrons
    Mig-29 UPG - 3 Squadrons
    Mirage-2000 - 3 Squadrons
    Jaguar - 6 Squadrons

    Mig-21 Bison - 6 Squadrons
    Mig-21 Bis/M - 3 Squadrons

    Mig-27 UPG - 2 Squadrons

Total - 35 Squadrons (Shortage of 7 Squadrons)

The fleet retirement prior 2024 is as follows:
    Mig-21 Bison - 6 Squadrons (2022-24)
    Mig-21 Bis/M - 3 Squadrons (2018-20)
    Mig-27 UPG - 2 Squadrons (2017-18)

2 Squadrons of MKI & Rafale each, and 6 squadrons of Tejas under procurement. That still leaves us with a requirement for 8 squadrons. The light weight category is significantly unbalanced. These guys should seriously do something with Tejas production schedule. Perhaps that's why even the ACM is praising Gripen NG in media? Do people seriously agree that 42 squadrons are enough to hold the dragon in a fight with our western neighbor?

It's 42 fighter jet squadrons for the IAF alone. Apart from that we will be adding about 15 attack helicopter squadrons, dozens of UCAV squadrons and about 10 IN fighter squadrons.

Indian Air Force Chief Arup Raha calls AgustaWestland deal scam ‘very unfortunate’

Indian Air Force chief Arup Raha called the AgustaWestland deal scam “very unfortunate” and said such incident acts adversely on the reputation of the air force. Former Indian Air Force chief S P Tyagi, his cousin Sanjeev alias Julie Tyagi and lawyer-businessman Gautam Khaitan were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday in connection with the Rs 3,600-crore AgustaWestland VVIP helicopter deal case. They were produced before Patiala House Court in New Delhi on Saturday where they were ordered to sent to four-day CBI custody.
Meanwhile, the IAF chief Raha commented on the whole issue saying it is a “very unfortunate episode.” On the current proceedings on SP Tyagi, he said it is a due process of law by adding that whatever be the result after inquiry, it will be accepted.

He further said that such “incident obviously acts adversely on reputation of a very professional force” but IAF and armed forces will continue serve the nation to the best of their abilities, he assured. “If anything is wrong, we correct it very quickly,” he said.
Asked about the ongoing demonetisation drive in the country, Raha said that are “quite okay” with it as if it succeeds, it would be good for country. He said the IAF is extending all possible assistance to the government in the prevailing circumstances. The IAF is “assisting the government in airlifting large quantities of banknotes” to take it to the different regions of the country in order to maintain availability of cash for public, said Raha. Besides, IAF has also deployed some people to help the government in maintaining round the clock production capacity, added he.

Air Marhsal Birender Singh Dhanoa to be next IAF Chief.
    December 2016

New Delhi. Air Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa PVSM AVSM YSM VM ADC will takeover as Chief of Air Staff on 31 December 2016, on retirement of Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha PVSM AVSM VM ADC. Air Marshal BS Dhanoa will be the 25th Chief of the IAF since independence. The appointment was formally announced on 17 Dec.

Air Marshal BS Dhanoa took over as the Vice Chief of the Air Staff (VCAS) on 01 June 2015. He was commissioned in the IAF in June 1978 as a fighter pilot. He is an alumnus of Rashtriya Indian Military College, the National Defence Academy and the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington.

The Air Marshal has mainly flown the Kiran and MiG-21 aircraft with flying experience across the entire spectrum of fighter aircraft from the Jaguar to the state of the art MiG-29 & Su-30 MKI, with an immaculate record of flight safety throughout his distinguished career as a field commander.

The Air Marshal has many feathers in his hat. As Commanding Officer of a front line ground attack fighter squadron, he led the IAF punch during the ‘Limited War’ against Pakistan to evict the enemy from their ‘dug in’ defences in the icy heights of Kargil region. During the conflict, under his leadership and supervision, the squadron devised unique and innovative methods of bombing in the night at altitudes never before attempted in the history of Air Warfare. While prior to the war, the squadron, for its high degree of professionalism and peace time training had been adjudged as the best fighter squadron of HQ WAC, post the conflict it emerged as the most decorated IAF unit of Kargil War. The Air Marshal himself was awarded Vayu Sena Medal for his exceptional devotion to duty prior to the war and the coveted Yudh Seva Medal post war for his outstanding bravery and leadership during the conflict, both in the year 1999. His command tenure of a Forward (Fighter) Base Support Unit was equally illustrious with the base being adjudged as the best in maintenance despite being an FBSU and was runner-up for the Pride of SWAC Trophy. He also holds the highest flying instructional category in the IAF and was handpicked to establish the ‘IAF Training Team’ abroad.

The Air Marshal has the distinction of having held a number of significant staff appointments at Operational Commands, Joint Training Establishments and Air Headquarters. The appointments include Director Targeting Cell at Air Headquarters, Director Fighter Operations & War Planning at Headquarters Western Air Command, Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Intelligence) at Air Headquarters, Senior Air Staff Officer of two Operational Commands (Eastern and Western) and Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of South Western Air Command. He is presently the Vice Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force. During his staff tenure, he developed the aerial targeting philosophy against our potential adversaries and transformed the concepts of Air Operations of the Indian Air Force to contemporary war fighting practices of Air Power. The success of performance of IAF units during international exercises in United Kingdom and United States of America under his tenure as VCAS is evident by the fact that all aircraft travelled half way across the globe and still maintained 100% serviceability throughout the exercise. The Air Marshal is also an avid reader and writer of Air Power and Joint Operations. He has held the appointments of Senior Instructor (Air) and Chief Instructor (Air) at the prestigious Defence Services Staff College, Wellington.

In recognition for his meritorious Services he was awarded Yudh Seva Medal (YSM) & Vayusena Medal (VM) in 1999 and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in 2015 by the President of India. He was appointed Honorary ADC to the President of India on 01 Aug 15 and awarded Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) in 2016 by the President of India.

He is married to Mrs. Kamalpreet and they have one son Jasman who is a law graduate.
