We need 55+ squadrons in order to dominate the entire subcontinent. It's an actual requirement.

The number of squad is not all. A squad of old Mig21 or brand new Su30 has not the same military impact.
A modern plane (in the same class weight and same mission) is more effective but also more expensive than a older one. So I doubt India can afford a total of 55 squad. A nice balance of 42 or 44 squad is already a powerfull force.

And why dominating the sub continent? you seemed to be a peacefull country. To be ready to defend yourself is enough, no?

India is a peaceful country - but it aspires to be the net security provider in Indian Ocean region including for Asean countries, against China expansionist approach to other countries. Note: for next Republic Day Parade all heads of states for Asean countries have been invited as Chief Guest. Not only that in recent Doklam standoff between india & China in Buthan, which finished yesterday, India has stopped the Chinese build of road in disputed territory to change status quo by force by chinese (this role is likely to increase in future)

I suppose, you are not aware India is doubling its economy every 10 years in last 3 decades @7% growth & India is at mid gear only presently.
To better understand India of Future - best to go below video produced/sponsored by U.S. Department of State’s for US industries, which also quotes all major banks future world forecast & also by Westpac Bank(joint Australia/USA study) for five different scenarios for the world economy up to 2100.

(Ofcourse India wont be high in per capita income, but we are talking economy scale - which directly effects capability to afford 55 squads in near future)

IAF has determined they need that many jets irrespective of how capable the jets themselves are. This was determined during the Cold War. Fighters have not changed a lot since then when it comes to endurance. So we need numbers to maintain presence in the air and create deterrent. And adversaries have become more numerous and advanced as well.

Plus, if we aim for 1000 jets, China will need 2500+ jets. This puts pressure on the Chinese to spend more to maintain parity for all their security needs, which in turn puts pressure on their slowing economy.

Affordability will come with economic growth. By 2032, India will be a $8T economy even with modest growth. The Indian defence budget will be about half that of the US defence budget today.

All our current projects are dependent on a minimum 8% sustained economic growth and as much as 12% growth in the defence budget until 2032.

As a country grows, so will its sphere of influence. Our military leaders are already talking about developing full range ICBMs even though we do not have threats.

    http://worldofdefense.blogspot.in/2011/06/indian-air-force-chief-wants-icbms-in.html
Naik, who heads the chiefs of staff committee, said, "India should pursue an ICBM programme to acquire ranges of 10,000 km or even more. Breaking out of the regional context is important as the country's sphere of influence grows. We have no territorial designs on any country, but India needs the capability to match its sphere of influence."

A major policy goal for India is to make the current UNSC structure redundant. For that we need top class military power. The current UNSC structure does not ensure peace. It was military power that forced China to withdraw from Doklam, not diplomacy. Only a strong bull can threaten another strong bull.

The 55+ squadrons is to dominate the Indian subcontinent in a military setting, to ensure air dominance for warfare against both China and Pakistan. This is not counting IN requirement or UCAVs. We need 650 armed UCAVs apart from 42 IAF squadrons and 10 IN squadrons before 2032.

Right now, our current goal is to dominate the IOR. 20 years from now, it could be entirely different. But first, we have to get to 42 squadrons. Everything else is just talk.

The recommendation by the air force was originally 64 squadrons back in the 50s.

For UCAVs, it is as many as dozens of squadrons. Not just 5 or 10.
