Gorakhpur hospital tragedy: UP govt's stand a damning indictment of Yogi Adityanath's work ethics

The Uttar Pradesh government has the blood of 60 children on its hands. The saffron robes of its chief minister are tainted with the blot of incompetence, insensitivity and, as Noble laureate Kailash Satyarthi rightly says, the massacre of infants.

In any other country run by a sensitive and competent government, these 63 children could have been easily saved. Because they did not die of a sudden calamity or in a tragic incident that could not have been averted. Their murder was scripted and executed by the apathetic staff of the hospital and criminal dereliction of duty by everyone in the administrative hierarchy.

The sequence of events that led to the massacre of 60 children in Gorakhpur's Baba Raghav Das Medical College since 7 August is a damning indictment of the government machinery. First, it failed to pay the contractor who supplied liquid oxygen to the hospital, running up arrears in excess of over Rs 68 lakh, even when, as the supplier argued, the terms and conditions of the supply agreement said the pending amount would not exceed Rs 10 lakh.

Then, in spite of ultimatums from the supplier that the supply of liquid oxygen would be stopped, the hospital management did not make any arrangement to ensure its availability. The government and the hospital management did not act even when they were warned that the situation could become grave once the contractor pulls the plug.

In the end, the hospital was probably wilfully turned into a gas chamber for children, an asphyxiating hell where death was guaranteed by choking. This is murder by negligence, massacre by incompetence.

What is astounding is that the hospital falls in the karma bhoomi of the Uttar Pradesh chief minister, the saffron-clad, Hindutva pin-up Ajay Singh, aka, Yogi Adityanath. When Adityanath was anointed chief minister of the state, his fans sang impromptu paeans to his competence, wrote reams of odes to his work ethics. He was hailed as a 24X7 worker who had the entire constituency on his speed-dial. Obviously, the fan-boys don't know that the tag of the saviour of Hindutva doesn't count much when the lives of children are at stake. It requires real dedication, competence, swiftness of action and resolve, an alert mind and a sensitive heart that screams emergency when innocent lives are at stake.

The chief minister could have been given the benefit of doubt if the deaths were not in his own backyard. Or, if he were not aware of the incident. But, as the Indian Express reports, the chief minister had visited the hospital just two days ago — nine children died that day — and inspected its paediatric ward, the epicentre of the tragic deaths. According to the Indian Express, he had also inaugurated a 10-bed ICU, a six-bed Critical Care Unit and visited a ward meant for children infected with Japanese encephalitis virus, and cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES).

The government's explanation that the chief minister was not aware of the crisis is either a plain lie or a damning indictment of Adityanath's work ethics. Are we expected to believe that the alleged epitome of competence and round-the-clock hard work doesn't even know what is going on in his backyard? Is the information system under the martinet whose very name reportedly sends a chill down the spine of his staff so weak that even tragedies of epic proportions stay out of the venerable Adityanath's ear-shots?

The tragedy in Gorakhpur, unfortunately, is a reminder of how some things never change in India. Even 70 years after Independence, hospitals are a mess, their finances are mismanaged and the government machinery is so callous that even clear warnings of an impending disaster do not force it into action.

Life is cheap. It can be sacrificed without a shred of remorse or penitence. The chalta haiattitude currently being showcased by the Uttar Pradesh government's explanations — false and misleading — and refusal to accept responsibility for the man-made tragedy remind us that though the colour of robes changes after elections, the blots on them remain the same.

In a milieu where hearts bleed only for cows, lynching is reserved only for people suspected of eating beef, transporting gau mata and chief ministers have a rapid action force only for saving bovines, it is difficult to believe the death of 60 children due to government incompetence would make anybody in the Uttar Pradesh hierarchy lose sleep. The game of assigning blames, spinning half-truths, shielding reputations has already begun. Soon, a scapegoat somewhere low in the hierarchy would be found and quietly punished. Or, better still, a natural cause would be assigned to these unnatural deaths.

To rephrase Shakespeare: What need we fear who knows it, when none can call our power to account? Yet who would have thought so many would have had so much blood on their hands?

yes a man who became CM just three months back while the outstanding payments for oxygen supply go back to over one year. Did this tantric stop a mulla govt from releasing that money? How about those who died for want of even medicines under BSP and SP? How many were killed? Do a bit of research before you post such bullshit.

Its appalling because he visited the hospital on the day 9 kids died. His own backyard, his own people. Why cant people like Kalam be appointed as important leaders ? Kisi ko bhi CM bana leta hai.

No Bro, it has been published in newspapers today that this very private contractor had done same act last year also and there were deaths then also. But it did not make it to news. This private contractor was hired by UP govt long back and had managed to retain this contract during SP & BSP regimes. UP did not have BJP govt for last 15 yrs. Can you still blame it on BJP? Another thing, you did not raise your finger when this Italian waitress looted this nation and you want answers from a four month old govt about what they have done? The best part is that today you can drive down at middle of the night from Delhi to Dehradun. It was not possible under BSP & SP.

an action has been taken. Lives lost and that of Children are horrible to say the least. The loss can never be made up. But I ask you how to get a decayed system back on track so quickly? Rome was not built in a day and UP took 15 yrs to be where it is today.

The BSP and SP are the lowest blot on indian democracy along with congies. There is no excuse for what has happened by blaming previous govts. If this was a herd of cows dying the whole state machinery would have rushed to save them. The health ministry of the UP govt should be sacked.

That's not all.Half the ambulances started in previous sp govt are grounded now due to lack of funds.Even though I seriously hate SP,108 ambulance and women helpline, were two very good initiatives started by Akhilesh.

Their is seriously nothing a govt hospital can do, if health ministry doesn't release funds. Two big reasons are BJP trying to give contracts to their own people as soon as possible. And getting suitable renumeration from people who got contracts in previous govt.Thats why all the work is thapp for now.

My dad retired as chief medical superitendent. And that condition of health department has deterioated in present govt is something I can vouch for.One big reason is that the new health minister is also busy doing lot of CM jobs,God knows what CM is busy in.

While media and everyone else will blame the hospital.Simple truth is that govt. doctors are most motivated to not let anything like this happen.Because they know they will be the first one to be lynched by mob even if as single person dies,Ministers and ADs will only come once situation is under control.Again there is nothing a hospital can do if even after repeated letters, the health ministry doesn't release funds.

I am sorry but you are so seriously wrong on this one topic. This govt has taken health ministry to depths that was not possible even in SP.And SP is made of the biggest criminals and mafias of UP.The blood is on BJP's hand and no one else's.Stop blindly justifying their actions as "60 saal ke baad aye hain". And yes please do some reasearch before asking others.

I am not at all trying to save BJP govt. I have very clearly stated that even one death is horrible. It could have been anyone from my own family also as I have many relatives in western UP not exactly in Gorakhpur. But those who are asking thses questions today, where were they when over 1000s children died under the so called secular govts for brain fever? You need to do your study mate.

More than anyone on this forum, I have deplored the deaths due to this sudden Gua rakshak people. But do you know when and where was this so called gau Rakhsaks were established as an NGO? That was in 2011 in Punjab to counter BJP. Apply your brain, why wud BJP create panic among minorities by such acts? it gives them only bad name. Today even I, as a Brahmin, scared to transporting a cow to my own house for the fear of lynching. Who these so called cow vigilantes serving? certainly not gau mata.
