In a startling saga of compromises made on the safety and capability of India’s frontline fighter aircraft besides posing danger to the life of pilots, it has come to light that at least 18 of brand new Sukhoi 30 MKI had been fitted with already-used and secondhand engines.

“It was noticed while checking the records…that AL 31FP engines fitted in certain aircraft was in Cat B condition at the time of inspection / delivery to Indian Air Force (IAF),” said a report encapsulating the findings that have been accessed by this newspaper. The IAF’s frontline Sukhoi 30 MKI is a multipurpose twin-seater supersonic fighter aircraft which is powered by two AL-31FP aero engines.

While this fitment of Cat 2 (category B) or secondhand engines into brand new Sukhoi 30 MKIs was done at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s (HAL) facility at Nashik “without the knowledge and approval of the defence ministry”, what is surprising is the acceptance of such aircraft by the IAF. “Certain aircraft with one new and one old engine were wrongly accepted by IAF and the Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance. As these arrangements were not in tune with contractual provisions, it should have been rejected by IAF and DGAQA…. In any case, IAF should have obtained approval from MoD for accepting aircraft with one second hand engine.”

Sukhoi 30 MKI has two AL 31FP engines

    • 18 Su 30 MKIs fitted with old engines
    • Poses reliability and safety risk
    • Fitment violates contractual conditions
    • India has about 230 operational fighters although just half is available for operational flights at any given point of time
    • 7 Sukhoi 30 MKIs have crashed to date, causing a loss of about Rs 2,350 crore

Whoever is responsible for this ought to be pushed out of a plane with a "gently used" secondhand parachute...

With this report Dassault's stand regarding not taking guarantee of Rafales manufactured by HAL stands vindicated.

Does this also means Dassault knew of this rot in HAL working?

Govt. Should roll the heads of All those who are responsible for this.

Its a criminal blunder similar to playing with the life of precious well trained pilot and also the cost of new aircraft. Its time to disband corrupt/inefficient govt cos from defense manufacturing and privatize but only after formulating stricter well defined laws for private sector in defense

    @PARIKRAMA @randomradio @vstol jockey

Can someone confirm if Russians too were involved in this? I mean if they were supplying old engines to assemble new SU 30MKIs like they previously did with MIG 29s to be supplied to Algeria where they found Russians shipping used Mig29s to them. Is Russia again taking India on ride?

Or If any arms agent or HAL & IAF insider was involved in such malpractices, where they use 1 new & 1 old engine in new fighter and sell off the new engine to someone else.

They wont be selling off a new engine as it is HAL's blunder thinking that it is ok to fit 1 old and 1 new engine. And IAF's blunder to accept it as it is.

And Russia would sure had knowledge about this as Number of Engines produced and fitted to number of Fighters are key in planning inventory and importing kits etc...

May be the original new engines were supplied by HAL to replace engines which went phut. And than they repaired those old engines and fitted them in place of the new ones.

Oh you can't expect much worse.. @Abingdonboy knows how muvh big it is..

A new jet and old engines.. we don't even know if it's refurbished engines or say some minor defect or what to categorise it as cat B.

But hopefully with PBL signed up such things won't get repeated..

Btw I did discuss this report with @Abingdonboy and don knw why I have a sneaky suspicion of a vested interest.. nodoubt what happened is a big f-up but still.. some more things are playing here..
