    Hi,
I saw some recent news about terrorist encounters and infiltration about Indin Army. In one of the incident we lost 2 soldiers for eliminating 2 terrorist. A ratio of 1:1. Then again we had another news that we eliminated 4 terrorist and lost 3 jawans. I am getting seriously concerned with this ratio. Can you guys please help me understand the following.

    1) is the ratio really high or I am having bad analysis.
    2) What can be done in terms of strategy, equipment etc to change this to a more acceptable ratio.

Ideally the kill ratio should be more than 1:3, and if the ratio is 1:1, then it indicates that the state is loosing and bound to be defeated. However, that ratio factor, comes only in case of Civil war, and not the proxy warfare. Point to be noted, is that out of 22 districts, problem is in 6 districts where the terrorist have foothold, and stone pelting in 4 districts. Coming to your question about the IA casualty, first clearify some of the detailed points.

    1. Indian Army IA or any armed forces are not meant to fight the terrorist, its the local police aka J&K police and CRPF, which need to fight, because fighting the terrorist will only weaken the Army, and will loose the conventional fighting capability.

    2. IA is only involved in Special Ops, and for that we have units of RR specially trained for that.

    3. BSF are deployed along the International border to safe gaurd the borders, but the borders which are temporary aka LOC which is 700+ km is gaurded by the IA.

    4. When you make the counting the kill ratio, don't mix the fatalty due to the border related clashes, and due to terrorists attacks.

    5. Things are not so much bad, but projected too much, due to the media person concentration on the Valley region around Srinagar, which is badly hit by the Pak sponsored terrorism, and the people protesting against the states funded by the ISI nexus. Once the chain of the Hawala funds is curbed, the stone pelting will too end its natural death. The total population of the J&K state is around 1.2 Crore, and if you take out the numbers doing protests and involved in the so called islamic Jihad is in handfull of thousands only.

    6. Most of the daring attack is done by the terrorist hailing from the Pakistani Punjab, and they consider the Kashmiri Militants as cowards, and are third rated, by Pakistan, and Pakistani supported militant group.

    7. Last but not the least, rest assure if the question of Kashmir arises, then we will be ready to flow the rivers of bloods in the valley, which Kashmiri cann't bear.

Now, to understand the problem, yes there is the problem, and that needs to be addressed. I think, it is due to the negligence of the Delhi govt. to follow the policy aka released the funds, and close eyes for 1 year, and wish "Bala tali for 1 year", forgetting that whether the state is able to divert that money to the ordinary people. The core problem is the Unemployment, and Pakistani knew it very well, since the economy of the Kashmir is based on the tourism, and now the job requirement in the middle east have dropped, there is an increase in the opposition against the states. Also due the previous UPA-2 govt. the govt. fails to provide the required relief to the ordinary people after the warth of the flood.

we need an ISPR type active Military type media tool for the IA. but then.. its easy for that tool to create a huge support for the army much to the detriment of the civilian govt. Imagine the Army getting all the support during the Anna hazare movement. the congress govt would be peeing in its dhotis/pajamas..

    Few points:

    1. Do not make threads to ask such queries. They can be posted in the relevant threads as applicable and members tagged.
    2. Causality and casualty are two different words. I amended the thread title accordingly.
    3. What analysis are you doing? I do not see any analysis. Just rhetorical queries. So your point 1 is redundant.
    4. For point 2, people can be made more intelligent, patience can be taught to people and the luck can be requested to favour you always.

As for the points being raised, the factors for a higher rate of casualty is as under:

    1. The need to obviate the civil casualties/collateral damage. Hence, calibrated firepower employment.
    2. Poor execution/training/situational awareness of individuals. (In short, the individual is too dumb to remain aware of his/her environment while conduct of operations in ongoing; this can not be taught to people if they do not want to learn).
    3. Hurried execution of operation (aka watching too many Rambo type of movies).
    4. Bad luck.
    5. Stupid Indian. (the biggest factor. The Stupid Indian is also inside the armed forces, expects others to tell him what to do/do his work, shoulders no responsibility - a fatal scenario at microlevel in an operation. Result: casualties of his own self or those he is supposed to back)

Let us grow up and stop blaming Government. It is like officer being blamed for every mistake of a soldier.

That's because terrorists attack when they least expect it and care jack shit about civilian casualties .

    Most of times its unpredictable

planting mines under roads & inside dead people/animals

    throwing live grenades into outposts

attacking easy targets like patrol troops while passing through narrow roads or crossing water by ferrying

We can solve 70% of these attacks by massively modernising their equipment & arms and creating a massive surveillance belt in the region .
